Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

How to fix my damaged wheel?

I was working a stubborn tire on my wheel when I heard a snap. I wasn't sure what had happened. After that my wheel spun so crooked that the bike was unrideable.

Upon further inspection, it looks like one of the nipples popped out of the rim, along with the threading, making it so that I can't just swap it out.

Here's a pic:

I was told i'd need to get a replacement rim hoop, then move the rest of the parts over to it. Is this correct? And is there possibly a cheaper/easier fix?

Thanks

Bikes: breezer venturi - red novo bosberg - red, pedal force cg1 - red, neuvation f-100 - da, devinci phantom - xt, miele piste - miche/campy, bianchi reparto corse sbx, concorde squadra tsx - da, miele team issue sl - ultegra

Rim at minimum. Good opportunity for you to learn how to diy. Rims are around $50. Pick a rim depth identical to what you have and you may be able to reuse spokes and nipples.

Agree rim is toast.

Probably not worth the hassle of repairing with a new rim. If it's fairly new, see if you can get a replacement under warranty.

If not, get a new wheel.

Mavic hubs and spokes are proprietary to their rims. I don't think they sell rims by themselves anymore and will probably offer to do a rebuild if you send in your hub for about $200.

Bikes: Too many.

It's toast. Time for a new wheel.

This, they do not sell those rims, even to shops. You will have to send it in to Mavic for them to rebuild it for about $200 and a few week's time.

Hmmm... for $200, should I spend a little more and look for a good deal on a new one that's in the same range as my current wheel?

This is definitely the way to go; looks like it's a manufacturer defect. Hopefully, the shop you're working with can arrange to provide you a loaner wheel in the interim.

For about $200 each wheel my LBS custom built me a good 36-spoke wheelset (touring) with double-walled eyeletted rims, butted spokes, and Deore LX hubs. The advantage being that nothing is proprietary and any component can be replaced by any LBS.

....and if you're not in the market for a boat anchor you can find something nice as well.
