Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

It's not the diuretic effect that's the problem.

I agree with you. If someone paid me to ride a bike I might consider giving up coffee. I don't think going fast on a bike is all that important anyway. Your body doesn't know how fast you are going, just how hard you are pushing it. If a cup of coffee slowed me down a little, so what I am still getting a workout.

By the way, I have a mini Starbucks in my kitchen. I have been considering roasting my own beans so it isn't very likely I am going to stop drinking coffee.

Do you drink coffee before a ride?
Coffee acts as a laxative. Does that qualify for a type of dehydration?

This is why I drink a smaller than usual cup prior to an event--to "get things moving" in the morning before I head out. Otherwise, I am a coffee fiend that drinks two cups plus each morning. BTW, I drink a lot of water each day, so I am well hydrated not only for riding but for life in general.

Classic! And so true. The poor biker's way to shed grams--lots of them.

This is my goal and a noble one at that. I plan to spending more time on the trainer so I can kick his ass.
