Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

How Much Money Have You Put Into Your Bike?

I've thrown about $100 into my $10 Super Sport, but I'm not complaining. I've already:
-replaced chain
-replaced freewheel
-replaced brake cables
-replaced derailleur cables
-replaced saddle
-replaced grip tape
-replaced back tube (twice)
-trued back wheel

Next up: new tires!

I've got about $900-$1,000 each into my MTB and fixed gear. It's hard to put an exact figure together for the fixed gear, though, since there are components on it that started on my first road bike about 4 bikes ago.

i have 3 bikes..for all three (road, hybrid, mtn), including the cost of me buying the bikes itself (new ocr3 '04, used Kona Blast 2000, 1989 Nishiki hybrid), clothes, lights, tune ups, etc etc etc about 2 grand. thats pretty good, imo, considering some people buy just one bike for like 3 grand

But in comparison to how much money I've put into other hobbies...cars, electronics/computers, travel, etc...the bikes aren't all that expensive.

~$1800 into the MTB
~$1500 so far into my Cinelli Unica build (hopefully it'll be on the road by next weekend!)

i put about 25% the cost of my mtb into it.

I put about 200% of the cost of my roadie into it.

EDIT: Does anyone keep track of expendables? I mean, tires kind of fall into that category, but new tubes and patches? I couldn't guess how many I've used. Glad air is free... must be why I have a big nose

I'd rather not think about it.

More uplifting question: How many hours of fun have you had on your bike?

264 hours.

That's longer and far cheaper than many relationships.
