Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I carried a Ruger LCP in my jersey pocket. Great little gun for conceal carry, I couldn't even tell it was there. You want this to be a last resort though.

Not sure that's necessarily true. I know a couple of people who have defused aggression by simply letting the other guy catch a glimpse of their handgun. A lot will depend on just what the other guy is after and how far he is willing to go to get it. Of course that leads on to...

If for any reason we got into some sort of altercation, regardless of who started it, and you pulled that reasonably real looking gun on me, I would shoot you. With my real gun. In real life. With real bullets. You would either suffer real injuries or die a real death. And I'm a friendly guy that wouldn't pull my gun until the absolutely very WORST of circumstances. Please consider the fact that the bad guy won't be as kind.
... which has a good chance of happening if the other guy is prepared to use deadly force. If it's just some punk trying to act tough the sight of a gun may persuade him to find another target. If it's an organised gang member (or entire gang) there's a decent chance they'll cut the niceties and pull their own weapons, which makes the situation 1000 times worse.

There just aren't enough adjectives for the word stupid to describe this.

But let's take a step back...

1. Don't carry a weapon (or facsimile) unless it is legal for you to do so.
2. If it is legal, make sure it's a real one that you can use to really defend yourself.
3. Make sure you are effectively trained on how to use it - and able to keep someone from getting it and turning it on you.
4. Run first, after throwing whatever valuable property you have in the opposite direction.
5. Don't brandish it. Only pull it out if you intend to immediately use it - to kill. And only if there is simply no other option for survival.
6. Don't be a SUPREME idiot by willingly & repeatedly going into dangerous areas at night and alone.

Again, I can't stress enough the importance of number 6. Failure to understand and comply makes you an automatic winner of the Darwin Award.

^^^+1 Well stated.

Gotta love fake gun threads. Gives more credence to the term poseur...only with possible deadly consequences.
Some people never quite grasp the concept of being dead right. Of course some of them are no longer with us.

That is just the stupidest idea ever. If you're going to get into trouble when riding, than the saying goes, don't bring a knife to a gun fight. Or don't bring a toy to a knife fight.

this idea is a NO GO. you will not succeed with this plan even if the idea sounds good. Use pepper spray and be careful where you ride.

The biggest problem with people brandishing a fake gun is that they get killed with real bullets.

+1 for the bad idea replies, You need to realize that state laws like Florida's "Stand Your Ground" would allow the person you brandished that fake gun at could legally defend them selves with deadly force. Many arguments about this law across the nation but the reality is that you are putting yourself at risk with this "gun" You may be legally "Right" in having it, but when some concealed carry holder or a banger sees that gun you could well be killed and then you would be Dead Right.

Oh, ****

The OP has accomplished something unique to my knowledge in Bike Forum history: consensus in a gun thread. Both the pro gun and anti gun folks think this is stupid.

This is a decision that's gonna get someone killed

Just carry your phone with a camera, pull it out and video anyone intrusive, get a go-pro helmet camera if you wish, but even a police person will shoot you if you pull out a device designed to deceive in a dudly do-right kind of way.

If you are stupid enough to carry a fake firearm, you are too stupid to carry a real one.

Better mount a gopro front and back on your bike, sooner or later you or the coroner is going to need evidence of what really happened.

The OP hasn't responded. Troll or enough of a thrashing? Of all the stupid threads in the 41, this is the dumbest. Worse even than the "what colour is your chamois" thread.

I thought about this after I got shot at with blow darts on a night commute home. After some self-deliberation, I decided it was better to find another route, then finally to ride during the daylight hours only. Last thing I wanted to do was provoke someone who had a real gun.

Live to ride another day, even if it means giving into idiot motorists at night.

I would spend a little money on a bike carrier that you can hook onto your car. Drive to a nicer neighborhood! Why would you bike in a dangerous area where you know you will be messed with?

PS--That airsoft pistol definietly looks more like a Sig!

I hear you yo, ridin dirty in the badlands of Orange County, CA - correct?. However, brandishing is going to require riding one handed, why risk it? I say wear a big ol fake dynamite vest with a whole bunch of wires running to a button on your wrist. Deck your bike out in a terrorist motif, maybe shave your head!

Ain't no lifted pick-ups going to be messing with you dude! Escalate, escalate, escalate!
