Cool thing is that on the 50+ we admit our frailties (sometimes exaggerate them...), don't have 30mph average speeds, and aren't quite as "smart" as on the 41 (smart not always equal to wisdom, which comes with years).
And I marvel at every race I go to that the guys at the top of the fifty and sixty something age brackets could still beat most of the open field.....
In case you wonder, I ain't one a them guys there, nossiree...

For Strava users, there is an over 50 club based out of Louisville, KY (because that's where I live). Secret code is 1952. People put on some pretty brutal rides there.

I joined the 50+ forum when I was 48, in part because I was a beginner and I wasn't ready for the hurlyburly of the 41. I found it most welcoming and I learned a lot. Well, I had a lot to learn.
But I agree with Dudelsack. I do wonder what it would have been like to be a young roadie. I am reasonably fast for an oldster (though plenty are faster). Maybe I coulda been a contender.....
But more importantly, I missed out on many years of great enjoyment.

Sometimes I get a bit depressed because I started cycling only when I was in my 50s. What could I have been if I had started younger?
I still would have been slow and too fat for this sport. That also depresses me.
Sometimes I get a bit depressed for no reason at all.
Then I think that, if I'm lucky and play my cards right, I might cycle another 20 years. That makes me a bit happier.
Then I ride out in the subfreezing weather this AM. It made me feel even happier.
But mainly I'm just kind of depressed.
Thanks for listening.

You're not going to suck me down into this thread. I'm 55, but I'm not a 41 Sucker.

Has there ever been a thread where there was a general age poll in the road cycling forum (and not in say the fixies forum or the vintage bike forums, cause that can have a huge effect on the results)?

Does it? Isnt this what separates us mere mortals from pros? Just because someone is over 75 and is faster than you, it has no correlation if you can go any faster.

I don't know if I'll bother to join the 50+ forum next year. That'd put me in the same group as my father and I don't know if I'm ready for that realization yet. He's 79 and still going strong. He was the oldest rider on last year's North Dakota CANDISC week long 400+ mile ride.

I should a spend more time on the 50+ forum since I have no interest in racing. I see cycling as a way of slowing down the aging process and having fun at the same time.

I have been amazed at the times people have asked me of the Plus 50 on our jerseys is for maintaining 50 mph all the time. I learned to just smile and say nope, it is the age of a forum group I am a member of, and enjoy. Too slow mentally to think of a witty riposte to their question, probably for the best too. I get more questions from the people in the 50+ age group and I tell them how bicycling has helped me improve very bad, serious health problems. Ride Safe and Ride Lots.

You seem to be asserting that only pros can develop more speed, and mere mortals can't. It doesn't work that way, and aging doesn't change that. If you work at it, you can go faster; age is irrelevant. Health issues may arise that impede that, but this is as true in one's 20s as in one's 80s.

Howdy,
50 this year, and not particularly graceful about it. Bought my first road bike for myself for my bday, and it makes me feel like i'm 30 again. I love finding new passions.

On a separate note, I love your avatar, that photo is just amazing. When life gets a bit chaotic, out of control, I like to gaze upon that photo and the little pinprick of light that is earth on the left between the rings, and suddenly problems seem to be put into their proper perspective.

A couple of years ago, we were celebrating the 50th birthday of a member of the club.
I am in my 40's and at that time I had been riding for about 3 years. I remember looking around the table and thinking, wow! everybody at this table is 50 or older and they all can kick my butt (riding).
There were 2 ladies (one of them a yoga instructor, the other one just a health nut) who looked awesome!
As somebody said above, cycling can be like a fountain of youth.
