Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Regarding the 2014 effort: What is it that you liked more about the format we used this year rather than the toned-down sheet introduced later? Was it that you each had your own page?

Main sheet

Alternative sheet

The second sheet is information overload: too many numbers on the screen and you need to scroll to the far right to see the most recent data. The original main sheet shows just what I want to see and if I'm interested in more detail I can drill down to the individual page. The alternative page might be better if data for this week was shown in a column near the left of the screen.

The individual sheet is most important to me, then the ytd main summary is next.
I'm not sure what purpose the overall 'group stats' serve...
I appreciate the bookkeeping effort on your part, and would prolly now keep my own SS, if yours doesn't continue...
I did use one of the online 'mileage logs' a few years back, but the hassle of logging in, and navigating thru their endless interfaces/ads to where I could do the entry, was off-putting.
I'm not sure of what value any group 'stats' mean. Our riding is all so different, as are the locales and climates we ride in.
AS an incentive to lose weight (or on the off chance the need to gain) or do more/consistent miles, this could help motivate.
So whatever you setup, I'm good with...

I have found a way (I think) to make 2014 even better with regard to tracking. For the rest of the year I will open each individual sheet to each participant. I'd like a few volunteers to try it out for next week to see how it works. If it goes as planned, we're onto something cool. May even share with the guys over in Commuting.

PM me with an e-mail address you are ok with handing out to me. It will stay in my Inbox and not be shared anywhere, used only to provide access to your sheet.

The proposed self-management method for 2014 will only work if a Google account is associated with the sheet. I don't think it is practical to ask all who wish to participate to get a Google account for this functionality. Bummer :-(

Any alternate ideas? The appearance of the sheet will remain largely the same, since most like it as-is, I'd just like to find a way for everyone to manage their own sheet.

I'd say dropbox it, but everyone would have to have excel.

Or people that don't have excel could just grab open office as a free alternative.

Definitely on board for tracking climbing in 2014.

I have a person in the queue to test with Google. If it works like I think it will, we could create dummy Google accounts (this is not GMail) and associate a Spam-catcher e-mail account with it.

So... If every rider were given his own sheet perhaps the only requirement he would need is to have totals in specific cells, leave the rest of the sheet to his discretion?

That was my thought. As long as the values from certain cells were locked or at worst, untouched by the user, this would work.

Hey kids, one week closer to the new year. Nice milestones for some of you, some over 100% of goal. Well done, all. I am having serious motivation issues. Weather cooperating this week, so hoping to get at least one ride in. Happy Thanksgiving to all U.S. based cyclists.

me 2 - motor-vation lacking
I would trade places with you anytime... Right now it looks like CO is having a good start to the snow season, whereas CA is just a bunch of cold rocks...
I was hoping to do some turns before Christmas, but now I'm hoping we get some dumpage before St Valentines...
Weather pattern is not good and seasonal forecast is trending very 'dry' - bum merde ...

Im with you guys, tough to motivate right now short rides albeit multiple in a week. To the trainer now, picked up a set of rollers to help with the tedium. Still, since I make my living off the snow trade I'm happy to have some cold weather for snow making!

69 deg and sunny... put in a light 31 miles this afternoon. 45 last night... planning on a couple dozen tomorrow and a century on Friday to spite the shopping stupidity. I do my trainer miles in July when the pavement melts my tyres.

My riding this week has all been after work when the temps start dropping below 60 again. I hate it. I'll take the 100+ any day over this. I hate shivering.

I dropped off the map for the last few months due to a renewed interested in hiking 14ers, then I moved to the central coast of CA about a month and a half ago and have been riding quite a bit the last few weeks. Thanks to the awesome weather I get out here riding several days a week year round is a very real possibility and I'm definitely in for 2014.

By central coast I hope you don't mean Santa Barbara. That's what the L.A. folks consider 'almost north' ;-) I may be moving back to the Monterey Bay, but sticking out another winter here. Back in the day, car-free was definitely a possibility in Santa Cruz.

@MikeyBoyAz, it looks like you are not having any trouble updating your page on the sheet?

About an hour and a half north of Santa Barbara. A 5 minute drive or a half hour walk from Pismo Beach. I'm perfectly okay with disassociating myself from the L.A. folks ;-)

Excellent. I suggest we move forward with Google accounts. No one needs to sign up for the GMail, you just need to associate any existing e-mail account with the new Google account. Next step in the testing is for someone to use a non-Google account to sign up for one (don't we all have Spam collecting e-mail addresses now?). I have tested it with my AOL account, the process being relatively simple.

I will draw up a simple procedure for getting to the right place and following the right steps. It'll work well and save me a lot of time :-)

Volunteers?

ALSO: Spread the word - I am considering making a post for it to see who wants in.
