Recommendations for Leg Warmers Needed

I am in the market for a good pair of leg warmers, and recommendations are needed.

Here are the criteria:

-Black

-Does not slip, i.e. stays put where it is tucked under your shorts.

-Kinda breathable; for example, one of favorite piece of gear are my Defeet Wool Kneekers, as they are breathable and do their job very well. And they stay in place. They are also thoughtfully-designed at the back of the knee, thus resulting in no abrasion at that end. It would be nice to find leg warmers along the same line.

what are the leg warmers you have/have had that you liked?

Thanks.

I have the Specialized arm & leg warmer. They fit the first 2 criterias, I wouldn't say they aren't the most breathable, but they do their job.

My ex girlfriend used to cut the arms off cashmere sweaters and sew loops of elastic into the arms to keep them up. Work perfectly. They're much cheaper than the ones in the bike shop, and much much better quality. Love 'em.

I have some Garneau and Pearl Izumi leg warmers. I tend to prefer the Garneau's. They stay up fairly well, but I have short legs, so they have a fair amount of overlap with my shorts and come almost to my crotch. Only once in a while to I have to pull them up, then I get a wolf whistle from my wife, who compares it to a woman hiking up her stockings.

Louis garneau. perfect for me

Where are ya, Jed? Here in COS, leg warmers under bib shorts under bib tights is what works for me, but I were in SoCal, this would obviously be overkill.

That being said, I have found the silicone grippers far superior to elastic. Any leg warmer that fits with silicone should do the job.

I am actually in SoCal. I'll keep your point re silicone grippers in mind. Thanks.

Ibex Merino Wool, phenomenal quality and comfort, wet or dry. Last pair you will buy.

+1 to Pearl Izumi. I like them better than some much more expensive leg warmers I have.

I have a set. Very happy. They do seem to run a bit big meaning at 6'3" the large still seems pretty long. They were on sale recently on their site for $35 so you might want to shop around.

My suggestion is to check Sierratradingpost.com. I bought Craft arm and leg warmers that I really like. They have a number of other brands and they are all at a deep discount.

How can that possibly be cheaper?

OP, I've been happy with my PI legwarmers and Castelli kneewarmers. The Castelli set seems to breathe better, but that's likely due to the thinner material. Both are black and both stay put.

I went to the bike shop, they sell a pair of leg warmers for $45.

My ex-girlfriend went to Value Village, bought a 100 % cashmere sweater for $7. Cut the arms off. Used $0.50 worth of elastic. Now I have the best leg warmers anyone can get.

She turned what's left into a pair of regular mittens, and a second pair of lobster claw mittens.

I keep telling her she needs to sell this stuff.

coasting 02-12-13 10:23 AM

Why buy a new sweater and vandalise it? Use an old one that has holes in it.

Seattle Forrest 02-12-13 10:27 AM

Maybe they don't have thrift stores in the UK. If you buy a sweater for $7, it ain't brand new.

But it's fine after you wash it.

I have pearl izumi knee warmers (I think they're just a little shorter than the leg warmers, but otherwise similar). I like the material, I like the warmth, they don't stay put. Drives me bats. For as often as I have to use them in SoCal, I'll live with it and just wear shorts that have snugger legs when I do. (I think I got 20-25 miles out of them last Saturday before i had to start yanking them up while riding. Stopped, rearranged my shorts & got another fair amount of miles out of them that way)

I have the L/XL model (6'2", 215#) and they just won't stay up. I didn't think S/M would fit but now I wonder.

Weird, the Defeet Kneekers are the only piece of Defeet gear that I dont like. I cannot keep them to stay up at all. 5 minutes into a ride and they are below my knees.

The Ibex wool ones work well, and the cheap Novarra REI brand ones do the job as well.

Dunbar 02-12-13 01:15 PM

I bought some Louis Garneau leg warmers last night at Performance Bike. I was able to try them on before buying. They felt almost identical to the Pearl Izumi ones and were $5 cheaper on-sale ($25 vs. $30.)

BTW,the leg warmers go all the way down to the ankle. The knee warmers at Performance looked like they covered quite a bit less.

Just goes to show that one man's meat is another's poison.

I have two pairs of the Defeet Wool Kneekers, and they are just wonderful. They stay up, have a vent-like design at the back of the knee, and more importantly, they don't have to be taken off when the weather warms up. I can start a ride with them in SoCal with the temperature in the low 40s and end in the mid 60s (with sunshine) without having to strip them off. And they are comfortable through the whole range.

Great stuff...............at least for me.
