Pffft. You lot ought to try the 60mph southerly buster that came through between Warnie and Port Campbell (and you'd know that was a SIDE wind), THEN the 15 hours of constant rain that followed. We were stripped down to our bike shorts and nothing else coz the wind was so strong, it ripped off the rest. the ex-road-racers were all hunched up snivelling in a corner at the Port Campbell youth hostel afraid to go outside.

Well, I've had some questionable experiences with non-paying Americans, but it wouldn't stop me from dealing with them if there is a rip-off (in my favour) in the wind.

I'd have more respect for audax folks if they raised the qualifying to something like 20kph....15kph?....fair dinkum, you could ride around the world & average that!...last years Alpine classic.....I got extremely 'lubed' the night before, got to bed at 4am, up at 5.30 for the 6.20am start......38 deg, 6 spews (I wish i was joking about that!)...2 hrs sleep under a tree & I still made the cut off by 45 mins...c'mon, 15kph is not a serious challenge!

It's one of those items that cost me a buck, and he bid $23.50, so I don't mind him getting it. I'd rather it go to the next higher bidder, and he can go get stuffed.

I did an Audax ride once (that was enuf). They had some clown rule that if you exceeded (I think) 29.5km for 200km then you didn't get your cert. So we ambled from pub to pub in the Hunter Valley at a liesurely 28kmh. God it felt slow, but the beer was good. Thank god that don't to drug tests on Audax or we all wouldve failed. :)

What's the difference between audax and randonneuring? I've managed to gather that they both involve long-distance cycling but are they just different names for the same thing?

mate...without a word of a lie....death woulda been a relief. I rode down to the start, (still p!ssed from the night before), got there & realized I'd neglected to pump up me tyres (I always reduce the pressure after each ride).....anyway, to cut a long story short......doing the Alpine in 38deg, pissed, wasn't one of my better ideas!.........but my point is....15kph...c'mon anyone can do that. 600kph, 1200kph, PBP.....no wucka's...when's the next PBP anyway?.....the missus is gunna let me go to France for the TDF, I doubt I'll be allowed (or could afford) to go again for PBP. you do that 'Great southern Randonee' thing?...that looks interesting!

The GSR is what I have been alluding to. 60mph southerly buster, 15 hours of constant rain. Strong tail and headwinds. Finished 17 minutes inside the limit. 5.5 hours sleep. And a heap of fun.

A guy on a mountain bike actually headed up the times.

PBP 2007 (held every four years). Many guys from Aus go over the for the TdF, do the various rides up l'Alpe d-Huez and the final one through Paris before the crit. good training (so they say) for the PBP. Usually the start is in the third week of August.

Subtle differences. Audax is where a group of riders get together and ride together for the entire event. Usually there is a leader, and he sets pace, issues instructions, keeps everyone organised. Probably little different to pelotons, except there is no surging, breakaways or somesuch. Someone drops of the back, and the group slows to bring them back on. Everyone stops to sleep and eat at the same time. With true Audax style, the average speed is expected to be 22km/h. It is not that popular in the US, but quite popular in England and some parts of Europe.

Randonneuring is simply long distance organised rides at the individuals' own pace. You can ride together, draft together, you can jump into other beds all day and night... or you can ride alone. Just so long as you come in under the maximum time allowed. The Audax philsophy can be layered over the randonneur one (ie, Audaxers ride in randonnees), but the reverse does not apply.
