Compression tights: Placebo?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Yes, and if you live in FL you have to wear them with plaid shorts and sandals.

I think the thing about compression tights is they cut down on the jiggle of body flesh

Can't quote the source which was eons ago, but I remember reading that they helped by stabilizing muscle mass. You don't jiggle as much.

I don't think compression clothing prevents waste products from building up. Compression clothing prevents blood from pooling in the extremities, and potentially clotting there.

I love mine. On the bike, I don't really feel a huge difference. On the run, however, the occasional shin splint is nonexistent with them on, and when I take them off after a run, a sleep in them, or after standing/running/walking all day at work... Brand new legs. The only time they didn't work as effectively was when I ran a half marathon. Had the feeling of spears in my calves, but I feel like it would have been worse had I not worn them during my run. This is more indicative of the run and my first time running that far though.

I say when your feet are pounding or standing for lengthy periods of time, they are definitely great. Biking... Maybe a century? I know Cavendish is sponsored by Skins (or was after they pulled out?), and he wore compression.

I have the unfortunate combination of two clotting genetic disorders, low blood pressure and an occupation that requires being seated for 14 hours at a time. Compression socks work for that. I also use them for recovery but that is again a precaution.

Isn't that easily managed with medication?

I'm sure I'm an outlier, but after a hard ride my calves bother me when I sleep. They just twitch and are annoying. I bought some compression calve sleeves, and I'm am so happy. I wear them when I sleep after a long ride and I sleep a lot better. I have no idea if they actually aid recovery, but sleeping better sure does.

personally, I have no idea about whether or not compression layers help or hurt, don't really care, I find them quite comfortable at times and use them for that reason alone.
