First Di2 Lockup

I've been generally pleased with my Di2 setup since getting it installed almost 2 years ago. I have accidentally depleted the battery a couple of times to the point where I lost shifting on the front derailleur, but other than that I've never had any mechanical troubles with it.

Last night I had it just quit working altogether. Somehow I managed to drop the chain, but I don't know if it was the cause or the effect of the Di2 problem. I just barely wedged the chain between the small ring and the frame, but did not force it. When I got the chain back on the small ring the shifting on both the front and the rear didn't work at all. There was no green light on the indicator. I thought maybe it had gone into "crash mode", but I couldn't get it to respond even by holding the button on the indicator.

Finally I thought to remove and replace the battery, and it all started working again. I've never heard of anybody having this particular issue before. I'll run it by the mechanics at the bike shop next time I'm in. Hopefully it was just a one-time fluke.

Thanks. Good to know (reinstalling battery).

Removing the battery during a lock-up is a common procedure with many electronic items, including cell phones and cameras. It just happens when something really goes bad and the software goes haywire, which doesn't happen often.

is Di2 running a windows kernel?? :D

sure you didn't mean "jail break it"???

SteveFromNY 03-27-13 11:12 AM

on another note, they should just make a version that's self-powered!

You probably got some gunk in there between the connectors. I've never had that problem, but I use Accelerade in my bottles - my battery gets pretty sticky.

I think he meant "Flip it"

I believe you would only do this if you wanted to use it with a Campy derailleur.

If the battery is integrated into the seat post, that would be a royal pain in the ass.

Sorry to hear that. please update bikeforums with what mechanics say. :)

It's now illegal in 27 states to jailbreak your Di2 and install linux.

patentcad 03-27-13 10:33 PM

So as far as I can gather from this disjointed thread, the big Di2 crisis was that you thought it was broken but it wasn't?

bt 03-27-13 11:00 PM

apparently disconnecting/reconnecting the battery on an electronic device is a new concept and thread worthy to the OP.

That's pretty much it. It appears to be working fine. Dunno why it locked up though.

I've done tech support before. I know that the first suggestion is always "reboot it."

"What?...Sorry?...I can't hear you!"

"Plugged in? Of course it's plugged in! Of, course it's...oh..."
