Ever have a Bee (or Hornet) stuck in your helmet?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Was cruising on the MUP by the beach and looked down to see a huge hornet was sitting right on top of my junk. One of the scarier moments of my life. Luckily I successfully flicked him off before he could do damage to my purple-headed warrior.

The big problem in my area is yellow jackets, and they're at their worst in late summer/early fall, until the first frost. The bee population is way down, and paper wasps and bald faced hornets usually don't stray very far from their nests. The hornets tend to build their nests under eaves and up in the trees--you see those huge paper balls and know they're around somewhere. Yellow jackets seem to nest anywhere they can, and they can hit you multiple times with their stinger.

I'm not allergic. As a kid, I got stung by yellow jackets so often that my parents called me "pin cushion". But I've never been stung by a hornet, and only once by a wasp or bumble bee. Never by a honey bee.

Last summer I got a bee in the helmet while riding with a friend. Wasn't the first time, but certainly the most memorable. I stopped to get it out and my buddy was laughing at me. While he was laughing at me he realized he had one in his jersey. It stung him on his shoulder which was really badly sunburned from the day before at the beach. I had to pull the stinger out for him because he couldn't reach it. I was laughing so hard at him I had a hard time doing it. Lesson: Don't laugh at friends who get a bee in their helmet, you may be next. ;-)

I usually get hit in the face by the little buggers, and a few do fly in my helmet but i just shake them out before they can sting me.

Tiny little boogers with wings. They fly in tight swarms that hover in small pockets of warm air, usually tou can see the swarm and dodge them but if not you get a mouth full. They're nasty.

Yep. I was nailed as well in the lip. I was going downhill 30mph or so into a major wind and a bumblebee nailed me. It really felt like I had been punched in the face. I kept going a mile or so, until I had to stop due to pain and feeling numb in the lip. I went to the country club parking lot to look in a car mirror to see what was going on. I saw a huge stinger pulsating in my lip. It was crazy. I have been stung in chest and arms also.
