Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

i want to change my tyres to change the colour scheme, but I haven't had a puncture in 2 years and there is too much life in my current tyres.

I've blown a tire a couple of years ago (not a Zaffiro), and the base model Zaffiro is under $20, so I just replace it if I have any doubt. Good info for future reference, however. Thanks.

I have a theory...not saying it's true or not, but perhaps the relatively thick rubber of new tires will holder small sharp objects allowing them to work their way through the cords and tube over many rotations whereas the thin rubber of worn tires is less likely to retain them, so if the tire is not immediately punctured, the objects are shed.

Anyway, I too find there is a lot of statistical fluctuation in flatting which makes establishing causal relationships difficult.

Sounds more like a hypothesis

Yes. You should get in the habit of doing a quick inspection of you bike after each ride, takes less than 30 sec.

Yes, that's the "cords showing" signal to put on a new tire.

It's just a throw of the dice when you ride. I went 5000 KM without a flat, wore the tire to the threads. Next 1000km killed a tire with a cut and three flats on the replacement of that one. All on the rear, same model, same roads and same pressures.

I wouldn't replace it just yet; That tire should be good for another mile or two!
