Garmin / Computer Mounts
 

I have a garmin 500 on the way and looking for suggestions on which mount for it. Any pictures showing it off. Thanks.

No pictures, but I was a fan with mounting it on the stem for a while. So far this season though, I've had the SRAM out-front type of mount for it, and couldn't be happier. For me its a better placement for readability. Highly recommend it, and I'm even considering getting a second for the beater bike.

If it fits on the stem, that's the best place. It's easy to read plus its safer from bumps and getting knocked around. The problem with barflys and others is they easily twist and get knocked out of alignment. But if you can't mount on the stem, any of the others works well.

While it's true the Barfly is easy to twist, I've not found it gets knocked out of alignment. It tends to just sit there. If it does get nudged, such as when I'm cleaning the bike, I just nudge it back into alignment, no biggie.

I like the out-front mounting; from an aesthetics standpoint, I prefer it to stem mount, but also, I think stem mounted computers are too far back for natural viewing (in my riding position) and not 'at hand' for manipulation while riding. I guess it just feels more natural to reach across than it does to reach across and back.

I think the SRAM is the best looking out front mount, what with its elegant lines, but I went Barfly because it was available in white.

We looked at this and decided that out in front is far better for viewing. SRM and others work this way for a reason.

I have the K-Edge and really like it. Very solidly mounted and won't move if it gets bumped. Pricey, but worth it in my opinion.

Me too and the best part is it is only $20.

i have a garmin out front and happy with it. friend of mine owns a barfly. it is ok but the garmin imho is a better mount

Anyway i think a mount is more or less necessary for racing. When racing in pack it is too dangerous to lower the head and eyes to look the edge on the stem.

I put a second one also on the bike on the indoor trainer

+1. I have the FSA computer mount, Barfly and Garmin out front. All work well and are solid. I have used them on my road and mountain bikes and they have not fallen off. Personally I prefer the Garmin out front mount between them all. It holds the Garmin a little tighter and doesn't stick up so high above the handlebars like the BarFly (perhaps the illusion of being a bit more aero). The SRAM is the best price of all models if you're on a budget. You can't go wrong with any of them IMHO.

I have the SRAM mount and it works great. The connection is tight and it really is easier to read than mounted on the stem.

Another happy user of the SRAM mount. It puts the Edge in a good spot and both clamp and mount are appropriately tight.

Fliploc garmin mount. 12g including bolt.

Yeah, I'm good with the extra 5g (and $15 in my pocket).

With the Edge 810 and K-Edge its actually not as easy to see the screen. I'm thinking of probably tilting it up a bit? Anyone else notice this?

yes, i had the same issue. at the end i tilted it up in a way that it does not look really "aero" (not lined up with the stem) but it works very very well, no more reflections on screen, very well readable

I like to mount my computer like an airplane wing to generate a little lift and reduce rolling resistance.

I agree, plus the finish on the Fliploc is fugly.

for $20, I can't find anything to complain about other than PROBABLY if I wasn't a SRAM user, I wouldn't like the logo printed on the mount. I've been through some nasty roads and my 810 didn't move one bit. if you can't read it then tilt it. I can't see myself paying more than $20 for a mount.

about the weight: no idea why would people complain about the weight of these mounts (as seen on other threads). take a sip off your bottles and there's 30g> off your bike.

Another happy SRAM mount user here. The stem mount works just fine but the extensions - SRAM or others - present a much better viewing angle. The SRAM mount has clean lines, is inexpensive and holds my 500 rock solid. The only complaint I've heard about the SRAM mount is that the Garmin does not sit flush with the top of the bars or stem and some people find this aesthetically displeasing.

I just went through this and bought the K-Edge mount. It's a quality piece, worth the money.

+1 K-Edge. A bit more pricey, but better quality. Holds securely and puts it just where you want it.

Yep, same here. The K-Edge is as solid as solid can be. No noticeable vibrations. I was able to get mine for about $30 on sale on eBay, but when I posted that link merely hours after purchase, the vendor had jacked up the price by $19.
