Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Weekend Cycling/Exercise Reports - May 4/5

First weekend of May!! What's it like where you are? Are you able to get out for a ride, or are you still riding inside? Are you sticking to cycling this weekend or doing a bit of cross-training?

Saturday - Over here, we're showing signs that winter is coming. It's a chilly windy day with threatening rain. But we might bundle up and get out for a short ride a little later.

If we could find at least one of our trainers, it would be tempting to set it up on the verandah.

Well ... we got out for a short 18.89 km ride on our tandem today. It was quite chilly ... the temperature only got to 11C today, and it was quite windy (30-40 km/h).

Mother Nature evidently doesn't care if it's May or not. 38.4 miles yesterday, with fat, wet snowflakes pelting me in the face for the first half of the ride, replaced by stinging sleet in the second half. Temp was in the mid-30s F. Still lots of debris and with the wet roads it's was no surprise that I also developed a slow leak towards the very end of the ride. Thankfully, I was able to make it home without walking or stopping to replace the tube.

68 here in MD. About to take a 32 mile fixie ride. Love riding my fixed on weekends due to the necessarily flatter routes having the least traffic, which is the opposite during the week.

That sucked. Just under 12 miles on the road today. Had planned on an easy 25-30 mile ride, but flatted about 6 miles in; enough tire damage that I booted and turned back for home. I guess I need to get some tank-like tires for the gritty springtime roads in MN.

My dog is holding his head at a weird angle kinda like a doggie stiff neck.

I'm staying home until the vet sees him at 2 today and we find out what is up.

He's pretty rambunctious so hopefully it's just a minor muscle issue.

70 mile ride planned for Sunday from Arlington through DC and Montgomery county MD. Sunny and hi 60s forecast but will be around 50 when we start at 6:30, which is a tad chilly for May. I am ready for warmer temps but they aren't here yet.

May 1 was Labor Day holiday for us workers/laborers. I rode 70 km to start off the month at my usual training loop. It is summer and very hot so I started my ride at 630 am when the temperature was already at 86 F. It was also windy but the wind direction was such that I could ride at 28 km into the wind and around 39 km with the wind.

But, I was scheduled for oral surgery - dental impant - on Friday and am still recovering. So, no riding yet, which is unfortunate since this is a long weekend with Monday being a make-up holiday for Coronation Day. Love live the King.

saturday: I did 40.8 miles from palo alto to SF with a small group of bike enthusiasts. At one point the Penny farthing bike( big wheeler) with the rider fell over but he was ok. I had chain issues and later it snapped clean off going through an intersection in south San Francisco, but a nice fellow stopped and helped me fix it. the ride was slow but interesting.
sunday: just relaxing.

Did some hill climbing this morning.

30 miles, ~3k feet of climbing.

Profile

Road leading up was traffic free.

I chuckled. Alpine is where everyone in San Diego goes to hill train.

Blistering uphill speeds...

=)

60 km this morning going west into the foothills. It was beautiful at about 20 C and a very slight breeze. Best ride of the year so far.

If you look closely at that penny farthing bike, how the heck do you reach the pedals? Look at the leg reach you'd need!

Glad he was OK. I've actually ridden one of those and it's difficult getting on and off, and you're waaayy up there once you're mounted. Falling that distance, especially if that heavy thing is on top of you, can't be a pleasant experience!

22.4 miles yesterday, 21.3 today.

Put new tires on the rims yesterday after my ride and on this morning's ride placed 9th overall on one strava segment, plus 4 more PRs. Legs are getting stronger and body is getting fitter!

Not ride related, but got some new work clothes yesterday...dropped a size in pants and shirts. Can also now squeeze into the slim fit cuts without any issue. Woohoo!

Update: 73.5 miles today but spring never showed up. Cloudy and windy all morning ( with sun arriving just as I arrived back home). A good ride nonetheless.

Chicago area is dry and nice and warm. Did a 3 mile hilly (at least for an Illinois flatlander) run yesterday, and an hour on the trainer. Today I did a nice and sunny 73 degree 50 mile ride.

the penny farthing has a foot peg that sticks out and he runs with the bike and puts a foot on the foot peg and gets momentum then jumps jump.simple. stopping is harder, he just goes through the intersection dodging cars like a mad (60 year old) man, but nice guy.
