Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What size stem do I need?

This must be my 10th thread about my new bike but I think I need longer stem. I went form a 54cm frame with 100mm stem to a 52cm frame with the same sized stem. I measured both bikes from the center of the seat post to the center stem bolt and the fuji is 1 inch shorter. Do you guys think I need a 110 stem or 120? I know a few months ago I was complaining about the reach on the green bike being too long but I got used to it after riding more and it felt comfortable.

If I'm missing anything hopefully the pictures will show something.

Bikes: 2012 BMC SLR01, 2012 Yeti ASR5, 2013 Trek Crockett

There is more to reach than stem length and seatpost to stem.

Are the head tubes the same size? Do both bikes have the same saddle to bar drop? A longer top tube or stem, or more saddle to bar drop will effectively increase reach.

I would recommend getting a bike fit if you havent already. It would be easier for an experienced fitter to get you dialed in on your bike than it is for us to guess. When I got a smaller frame I thought I would need a longer stem, but the fitter put me in a more agressive position which increased the reach. I ended up not needing a longer stem.

I'm getting a fit eventually. The saddle to bar drop on the green bike is greater than the fuji. The headtube on the fuji is slightly longer but the green bikes bars have a longer reach. I thought about replacing the 3/4 inch headset top cap but I didn't think it would make as much of difference as a longer stem.
