laughing at myself

I have an 2008 colnago clx with campy centaur. I bought it with the plan of upgrading the Campy to Shimano, but I never got around to it and the bike was relegated to my cottage bike. One thing about this bike that always pissed me off is I had to let air out of the tires in order to remove the wheels. I couldn't understand why they wouldn't put the little switch on the calipers like shimano does.

This morning while loading the bike up, I unknowingly pushed the pin on the brake lever and the the lever went to an odd angle. I thought I had somehow broken it. I played around with it for a minute and found that I could pull the brake and push the pin back through and everything was fine. Perplexed, I briefly couldn't understand why these levers had this pin thingy. Then it hit me... I can't believe how many times I let air out of the tires just to take them off. I was considering going to a 19mm tire so I wouldn't have to deal with this anymore.

...upgrading the Campy to Shimano...
The first and last these words will be seen together in this order.

Shimano had a version of this many years ago, pre brifter days. As they usually do, they moved on ahead of the competition.

You are not the first person who has wondered how to get the brake to open up with Campy..

That makes me feel a little less stupid. Maybe if I keep poking around the shifters I'll discover a pin that allows me shift with the brake lever instead of the annoying thumb shifter. ;)

Sounds like a bizarre plan. I don't think you quite understand the concept of "upgrade."

In other bizarre Campy ignorance, my LBS guys don't know much either. I had a bike in for a quick wheel issue and he had to ask me how to upshift.

Campy makes great stuff. Shimano makes great stuff. SRAM makes great stuff. When are Campy adherents going to finally grow up and accept that there are no objective and demonstrable quality, performance, durability or aesthetic differences among them. Enjoy your Campy as I enjoy my whatever, but does your ego so badly need stroking that you must believe your choice of parts must be better than any other now and forever. What difference does it make so long as you like them? I guarantee you there are crossover upgrades from one brand to another all along the respective product lines. Must you really believe that bottom of the line Campy is somehow better than top of the line Shimano? That's ridiculous, but so par for the course. Could you not just let the upgrade comment pass without comment like an adult?

LOL at your silly comment. See my more detailed comments above. But do I understand you think there is no Shimano group better than Centaur. In what universe?

No!

There are certain things worth fighting for and worth dying for, dammit!!

Everyone here knows this. Poking fun at different brands is a cycling joke.

Ok, I'm calmer now.

As you were.

Actually I've given campy the old college try. Probably a lot more than you campy zealots have given to shimano and other groupsets... two years and counting. Having 7900 and DA Di2 on my other bikes, I've never really felt right on the Colnago and would be the last bike I would choose to ride when my other bikes are available.

This thread has potential.

Potential to give Campag4 (obvious reasons) and BDop ('brifter') aneurisms for very different reasons.

I stand up for the truth. I defend the truth. I uphold the truth to the last vestiges of my honour. I still have a few vestiges left, and I mean to use them. As for my encounter with that dwarf in Macau, I will swear to my dying day that I had no idea she had a bike with Shimano on it. And anyway, we used protection.

Without specifically indicating models, the assumption would generally be that the OP is considering a switch from one level of Campy to a relatively similar level of Shimano, which is simply not an upgrade in any way, shape or form. Now, not liking Campy's thumb levers is a shortcoming in character, personality and indeed morals that is still somewhat understandable (if not completely forgiveable), but wishing to switch to a brand without the evidently far superior thumb levers is purely a personal decision...it ain't no upgrade by any objective measure.

As for the dwarf, well, her name was Rosie, and let's just say it didn't only exemplify her outlook on life...

its because campy fanboys are the same type of guys that fall asleep sniffing their Rapha's chamois :)

When we are at the SRAM Force, Shimano Ult/DA and Campy Chorus level of components....there is no upgrade.
Personally, I think SRAM Force is the best bang for the buck out there; superb quality, ka-bang engagement and understated aesthetics. Have it on 2 of my CF bikes, will get Force 22 for my next one. Awesome group.
While I'm at blabbin, Shimano Ultegra wheels are the best mid-range wheels on the planet.........I thought Fulcrum Racing 5's were, I was wrong.

For some reason, i think mostly because of the star I always read your posts in a mental drill Sargent voice. This only reenforces that.

JamieElenbaas 05-07-13 02:40 PM

Ah, just having a little fun...

dtrain 05-07-13 02:45 PM

A Colnago with Campy? Meh, probably okay for a cottage bike. ;)

If you have a cottage, you are either living in the Canadian countryside, or have been transported in time back to the mid-19th century, anywhere.

ahsposo 05-07-13 02:56 PM

Hey OP! Does your dental practice have a specialty?
