How'd you get everything in the box like that? Does one of you work for a bike shop? I thought Spec. got all snooty about building your own bike as far as the warranty is concerned...

I have built bikes and they always honored the warranty, they just never asked. But I do have friends that take care of me in the bike business. First thing you see on the box is this disclaimer, but I don't feel like paying $250 for assembly, when I can do it myself in less than 2 hours. OP said he was lucky. I am not convinced. We haven't seen his wife. ;) Further, we have no idea what bike he bought. A S-works isn't a bike model...its a version of a model. My guess is the bike is a Tarmac but could be a Venge or a Roubaix. :)

If you followed the link he provided in the OP, you'd know it is a Tarmac.

guess I am confused, you bought a 8000.00 bike and it came in a box for you to assemble?

Actually, this is where the OP gets props. Real bike guys build their own bikes. A very happy day when the Specialized box arrives. Mine below.

Yup -- full Nokon on my custom steel bike (aluminum, not carbon Nokon). They are expensive, and they change the feel of the shifting and especially the brakes. Much more direct, much less flex. On the shifting, it's similar -- makes the SRAM (force in my case) feel like Campy. The other thing is you can move it, and it stays in place.

Negatives -- it's expensive, and needs to be wiped down every so often (I wipe it with a cloth when I clean the bike, and then put a drop of triflow on)

Agree. My favorite way to buy a Specialized bike is as just a module/frameset. That way I can hand select everything else.

Great gift congrats. Just an FYI, the red brake pads that come with those wheels suck. Get some black prince pads.

Guy like us like to build them up from the frame for the simple reason, we are too fussy to buy our suits off the rack. :) I don't have a single Specialized product on my frame other than the Toupe which is 155 and not stock from the factory on the bike. I also prefer FSA K force seat post...Kwing handlebar...Campy groupset which doesn't come on Specialized bikes etc. I will tell you though Mike, with new Sram Red and DuraAce 9000, I could easily live nicely with each. I may lean toward DA 9000 11s though because it is so good including DA wheelset.

still confused, its not just a frame, its a complete bike.

I just bought a sworks roubaix frame and and having it built (guess I am not a real bike guy) but I did so to pick my components and I already had most of them. But if I bought a complete sworks bike, seems for the retail price, they should assemble it?

Hmmm, I'm trying to justify spending $200+ on Nokon cable housing.

Well, I'll try. First it's very cool.

Now in full-justification mode: it's lighter, leads to crisper shifting and especially braking, and when it's time to re-cable you just re-thread inside the housing, so it lasts way longer.

Also, it's very cool.
