Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My first "big" ride post fall

Did a big ride (for me -- not for most of you ha) this weekend (this was the route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/1232533 -- we picked up the route about three miles from the start so our total was about 40 miles) with a climb that was about 1,000 feet and only sort of steep in one place. It's a pretty easy ride for most of you I'm sure but it was a big accomplishment for me -- my first time on the "Climb to Occidental". A friend and I were supposed to meet a group of riders but we got a flat tire (on our car) and were late so it was just the two of us for the roundtrip. It was a great day -- a bit of wind, not too hot and only two jerks on four wheels. One of them honked at me because I was "in the road" (I was holding my line as close to right as I could and going almost the speed limit) on a downhill that had no bike lane. (ON an aside, I'm starting to think what this country needs is for drivers to be required to pass a bicycle safety quiz when they get their driver's license. I really believe that part of the problem is that they don't know that the laws allow us to be on the road with them in more situations then they think.)

Anyway, it didn't mess up what was a nearly-perfect day.

Congrats, a Friend and I did a 40 miler yesterday. We live in southern Alabama, so I know all about "jerks in 4 wheels".
