Reminds me of a trip back to school umpteen years ago where interstate roadwork forced everyone onto a detour. We had to take this bridge across the Mississippi, and it just happened to be at night. One lane each way.

About 150 ft before you even got to the bridge you could hear a grinding sound. When we got there we discovered the sound was coming from the wheels of the big rigs rubbing against the sides of the bridge in each direction as the trucks inched past each other . . . yes, sparks included. One of the scariest moments of my young life!!! The only small comfort came from the realization that the truck were obviously wider than our car, so we had a few spare inches to play with.

The Tasman Bridge spans the Derwent River in Hobart, Tasmania, my home city. A bulk ore carrier hit one of the pylons as it went off course and brought down three or four spans. Killed a few people, and some of the bodies have never been found under all the debris. The ship is still on the bottom, and they rebuilt the pylons aroundthe ship.

This was the main arterial into the middle of the city from suburbs to the east. The next nearest bridge was about 20 miles upstream, but could only be accessed initially by a nasty gravel road, or by doing a 60 mile loop further out to the east.

So the army stepped in a built a Bailey bridge -- a Mechano set bridge all bolted together with timber planks -- about five miles upriver. Initially, it was only one lane, so they had a "tidal" system for peak hours on the stop-go each side. They eventually replicated it with another Bailey bridge to ease the congestion. There also were around 10 ferries servicing one side of the river to the other (and so the catamaran ferry was born as a result -- yep, in little ol' Hobart).

It took something like three years to rebuild the Tasman Bridge, and the Bailey bridges were replaced by a big concrete one. Traffic is now stopped from crossing the Tasman Bridge whenever a ship passes underneath.

It must be the customer-service TV. I can't imagine watching day-time television any more. I've never watched morning TV. Night-time is bad enough.

I hate waiting.

Speaking of music, soon our very own Pcad will be raking in the big money:

Blake Morgan is an independent musician whose "" was among a number of his songs that got some 28,000 plays on Pandora. "The song earned $1.62 in royalties over a 90-day period on Pandora," he says, "which is a very typical rate."

That bridge was rickety, had two undivided lanes and was ridiculously steep. They replaced it in 1992 and later destroyed it.

And when one rode a motorcycle across it the open grill made the front tire wander a little left to right. Also when looking down one can see the water through the mesh underneath you as you ride over it.

Speaking of that fecal matter of a program, Rowan, think you can wrangle me an Australian visa?

Dannihilator 06-17-13 08:19 PM

Got some time in at the DJ's today, then waited out a storm afterwards went and put in 30 miles. Said storm was "a bit" strong.
Trees down, people on the otherside of the river are without power.
http://i423.photobucket.com/albums/p...ps2313cbbd.jpg
On the final mile home something felt wrong on the rear of the bike. After getting home I go to wipe the bike down to find this with the rear tire.
http://i423.photobucket.com/albums/p...ps2f06f17a.jpg
Sidewall is bulged out, so I go and pull the tire off and find that there is a hole in the sidewall of the tire down by the bead.

Needless to say new tire time.

Needless to say new tire time.

That tire looks new, well except for where the Allen wrench is sticking through it.
