Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Favorite kill! This time right in front of his girl!!

With all of this talk about unwelcomed drafting, I thought I would share one of my most memorable drops. I thought that since I had not ridden for two days because of rain and a combination of lack of sleep and muscle fatigue, I decided that I would take a nice EZ ride.

The East and West river drive would fit the bill nicely. It is basicly a 9 mile loop around the Schuykill River. The West river drive Is closed to automobiles on the weekends and the East river drive, you ride on a path filled with tourists from the Art museum, dog walkers with long leashes! Joggers that stop and spin around without looking!! Kids!!!! And novice riders. Gret place to hone your bike handling skills.

Now to my kill! I always begin my ride on the West side and come around to the East side and back around again. as many times as I feel is needed. On the West side I usually keep a speed of between 21-22mph riding alone and 17-19mph on the East side when I can do it safely. Its mostly stop and go!!

On my first lap I noticed a guy and lady riding together coming at me. What caught my eye was the World Champian kit that the guy was wearing! He looked fit and trim but not World Champian fit!! He and his girl were apparently riding up and back on the West side, maybe 4 miles total up and back. I nodded at them and kept riding. did my first loop and came back around by that time they were now heading back down in the same direction that I was riding, I passed them and said good morning. I then completed another lap this time I guess they speeded up a little and were now at almost the start of the West side when I saw them again. As I was coming up on them I saw the guy motion toward me and the women look over her shoulder, as I passed, the guy immediatly jumped on my rear wheel! The women just kept pedaling as she had been. I now had the world Champian on my rear wheel!!!!

There before me was a nice two mile stretch, No obstacles! Nothing to impede his girls field of vision. I Pedalled up to my usual speed, He was still there! although I could hear his changing of gears. It told me he was laboring at only 21mph! I took it up to 26mph I heard his gears change again and the sound of his bike started to fade. I then took it up to 28mph And stayed there! No sound of a bike behind me! No sound at all! I looked over my shoulder and just as I turned, I saw what could have only came out of a movie!! Have you ever saw one of those old movies where a byplane is being shot down? They usaully bank left or right and then bank over and crash!! That is just what this guy did! And on a bike!! All in front of his girl!! He banked left, straightened up, then banked right, right into the sidewalk!! and onto the grass! This all happened in seconds! I couldnt believe what I just witnessed! I kept riding all of the time wondering if his crash was my fault! I came back around from another lap and his bike was still laying in the street but to the side and his girls bike was on the grass beside where they were now sitting. I nodded and asked if he was allright? He just glared at me! His girl used that stare that women do where they use their perephial vision so the guy cant see them looking at you. What is the worst drop that any of you ever dealt out to unwelcomed guests?

I was out at White Rock Lake riding my unicycle and passed a guy on his bike who was walking his little dog as he rode. I'm sure he went right home and threw his bike and his dog in the dumpster, as I've never seen him since.

But it will end quickly.

Cool story OP. You don't need to tell it again though.
