Do I really need a jersey?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I will not cover what most have already, but you mentioned sizing. there are jersey's that will fit you fine. Not all jersey's are race fit. If you go with a 2XL in club cut it will fit you fine, I have a 46" chest and I have had to return jersey's for being to baggy on me. Not all jersey's will break the bank either, if you shop around you can find nice jersey's for cheap, example

Please don't buy a Primal Gear or other "wacky" design. Yes, we've all seen the "Dark Side of the Moon" jersey.

I used to wear one on centuries. Yeah....I'll admit it. I did this until I seemed to be drawing a lot of attention from some certain riders. They were young and male. Turns out they had no idea what Dark Side of the Moon was, but really were drawn to the rainbow on my jersey. Meh....I was flattered.

Well, I bought a nice, inexpensive, plain colored (red) jersey, and wore it today for a 30 mile ride. Sorry, I really don't feel any different in this 40 dollar jersey than I do in my normal cotton T-shirts (most with the logo of my local bike shop). I did, however, like being able to put my phone in the back pocket. Maybe I'll buy another one, or maybe not. I might just save this one for riding in a few centuries with my brother. Thanks for all the input, though!

If you don't feel the difference then you are good to go with the cotton t-shirts. Just enjoy the ride.

You must not be a heavy sweater. After 5 miles in a cotton shirt I need a change of clothes and a shower. Not the case with lycra.

I'm cheap and put if off as long as possible. Now I couldn't imagine riding in a T again. They are cooler, backs are longer to cover better when bent over and the pockets....well once you've had them you'll find it hard to live without them.

If you don't feel the difference or not into it, I wouldn't buy another for the sake of getting another. Wait until one of the centuries you ride and get a jersey from the century. At least it would be a good memory every time you throw it on. Perhaps an Assult on Mt Mitchell one!
