Why? After one concussion, a broken rib various lacerations last year and too many aggressive dogs I need something and am unhappy with halt.

One part Smith and Wesson Model 41 pepper applicator
Ten parts .22 bird shot load
One part black pepper

Combine the ten parts of .22 bird shot load with the one part black pepper and shake gently. Load into Smith and Wesson Model 41 pepper applicator. Apply as needed.

If you have any friends in law enforcement...have one pick you a small canister of "Fox". I have used it quite a few times....it will make the toughest of the tough cry like a little girl...believe me! If you don't want something that potent, the next step down would be "X2".

Maybe I'm just lucky but I've ridden for years in the city, and now out in rural areas, and I have yet to be chased by a single solitary canine. Maybe Canadian dogs are just more polite?

What kind of dogs are these? Strays or owned? And is this rural or urban riding?

I don't know anything about pepper spray, but have you looked into the bear defense versions?

I wonder about the commercial spray cans of various brands of pepper spray, getting too hot on very hot day.
It's been around 100f lately and 110 on the pavement on the bike.

Dogs are predatory in nature and they have a "chase" trigger built into them. When you try to out run them, they, by nature pursue. Have you ever stopped, taken an aggressive posture and yelled a command at the chasing dogs? Might be worth a try. You might make sure to have a can of HALT or other commercial spray available before instituting this plan, and you might even want to dismount before trying this plan, in case you do have to confront the dog.

I would also call animal control and see if you can tell them where on your route this occurs and have them waiting for you to ride by so they can observe and react correctly, assuming it is within the jurisdiction of a city. If not, might give a call to the county and see what resources they offer. Dog ownership comes with responsibility. If the dogs are strays, they need to be rounded up any way.

So now we're using OP as bait for the dog catcher? Have the dogs chase him right up into the truck or pound? That's an awesome idea.

Not necessarily bait, as I would not advise running from a pursuing animal, as it triggers their attack / chase response.

When our dogs get out, I tell the boys not to chase the dogs, but to get the dogs to chase them, and then to run home! If you chase the animal it flees. If you flee from the animal it chases.

First off don't make your own. The commercially available defense sprays have better propellant and packaging than you can make.
Second don't get a spray, get a gel. Spray will mess you as the user up as well as anyone within breathing distance.
Third, don't skimp on self defense. Ever.

This sounds very reasonable. However, in economically depressed rural areas I can personally attest that some owner's really don't give a **** about being responsible. In fact, they probably consider the dog to be a weapon and an expendable one at that. Instead of family pets, they're like junkyard dogs that are guarding a meth lab instead of a junkyard.

if you ride with your dog seems like you have encountered atleast one dog that is chasing a cyclist, but i'm no math wizard

Indeed, but they often relocate and can pop up almost anywhere. Usually the first indication something's amiss is when a crazed pitbull is hauling ass across a front yard and heading straight at you.
