Obvious no brainier... Replace the fork. Far cheaper than a hospital visit.

If they don't warranty it, I would take pictures of the fork with the company logo visible and send them to busted carbon. Treks of that vintage seem to have had some problems with dropout bonding, but I've only heard of them on the rear.

Funny about trek, I owned an oclv and then 2 y-foils and the only issue I ever had was one of the y-foils needed to be repainted because the paint chipped from "bottom bracket flex". That was done under warranty. Never had an issue with anything else. Of course I sold the y-foils in early 2004 and I haven't owned a trek since. Did they ever fix that "dead wood" feel from the bottom bracket w/ their carbon bikes?

They are going to try to submit a claim anyway, or at least contact their rep and see what if anything can be done. Crazy as it may sound, I think a proper glue job will make the bike safe enough to ride until he gets a new fork. There are some impressive glues out there. Find one that will bond well between the tip and fork materials.
From what I can tell, the tip slides over the fork. The wheel isn't going to be coming off unless he is popping wheelies at the same time the glue fails. My only concern would be the tip taking too much stress and cracking, but a proper glue job evenly around it inside should put even pressure everwhere and solve that. |

I would cut off the rest of the blade and get some Cannondale stickers, or get with a boating buddy and borrow some 5200...

A bike that old.....Just get a slashbar fork. Black goes with everything.... $100 and you're back in business....

A little touch up paint and some clear coat will have it looking like new.

I have seen Calfee glue rear dropouts back on. It was glued on to begin with use something good like WEST epoxy. Clean well first.

Doesn't look like there is any physical damage. Just looks like there wasn't enough glue/epoxy when it was assembled and the bond separated.

Ordered a new fork through the local shop. Posted on Treks Facebook page asking politely for some help. Trek responded with give us some more info, and will see what is possible, of course while reiterating the Original owner policy. Very clean separation of the fork and the aluminum piece, no damage at all. The other side also has a separation in the paint appearing, but is still stable. If I could afford a new frame I would go that route, but that is not going to happen anytime soon.
