Bib or Shorts?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bib or Shorts?

What do you wear when you ride your road bike? Standard shorts or bib?

Bibs. Much more comfortable and they stay in place.

Why not wear bibs mountain biking? I recently bought kit with bibs and I love them, more comfortable and especially if you enjoy a few post ride beers, it holds the gut in a little better without the waistband digging in. I wear bibs for both road and mountain biking.

I like shorts when its hot (like now), and shorts or bibs when its cooler. I really do not find bibs all that more comfortable than shorts. Well, perhaps with the exception of Assos shorts which are poorly designed and seem to slide down when riding (unlike their bibs). But the higher quality shorts from the likes of Giordana, Sugoi and Gore are superb. Generally, I reach for shorts on my rides.

In 20-some years of cycling, I have never tried bibs.

The standard response as to why "bibs are more comfy than shorts" seems to be related to the waistband digging in with shorts, or the fact that shorts slide down. I've never noticed either happening, so (to me at least) bibs seem to solve a problem that I don't have.

Shorts, too tall and skinny for bibs to fit properly.

I use both. For me, there's not much to choose between them. For the shape of my body and the way the shorts fit, they stay in place fine and I don't find the waistband to be restrictive or uncomfortable. This changes if I put on a few lbs and my spare tire starts conflicting with the waistband. Then bibs are preferable.

Bikes: yes!

Like others, I didn't think I'd ever like bibs. Once I tried them i won't even ride in shorts now. Bibs win, hands down!

I'm on the taller side and diffidently skinny, 6'0 162. Sounds like I need to just try both.

David, how tall are you?

Shorts. I can't get use to the shoulder straps on bibs.

Bibs. They were what I bought at first so I have no comparison to shorts. I am pretty skinny, 5'8" and 130lbs, so the waistband might not be as much of an issue for me.

Six feet and ONE THIRTY??? Dayum dude!

I'm two inches taller and forty pounds heavier and most people consider me skinny as a rail!

Bikes: are better than yours.

How is it that nobody ever thought of this for a thread topic before?

This conversation has occurred at least twice this week already. I prefer bibs however I have a couple pairs of shorts in the rotation, too.

I probably should have done a search first. It's been awhile sense I have been on a forum.

I wear shorts when I ride shimano, bibs when I ride campy, toss up when I ride SRAM.

I wear bibs when I'm being chased by dogs and shorts when I carry my gun.

I wash my bibs by hand, but wash my shorts on the delicate cycle in the wash, never dry.

I usually wear shorts when I wear my $25 helmet, but bibs when I wear my $250 helmet.

Ladies and gentlemen, the 41!
