Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Weekend Cycling Ride Reports - Aug 3/4/5

Happy Heritage Day, British Columbia Day, Provincial Day, New Brunswick Day or whatever other holidays are on this weekend to make it a long weekend ... there's quite a list of them. https://www.timeanddate.com/holidays/ (But I think Australia needs one too!)

Are you celebrating your weekend or long weekend with lots of cycling? Tell us about your rides this weekend (or surrounding days if you don't have a weekend off for cycling). Or is it the middle of winter for you and you've switched to other sports? Tell us about those too.

And if you've got photos of your bicycle on a long summer's day ride this weekend, let's see them.

Saturday - it is the middle of winter for us, and it is a very chilly, drizzly, sleety, windy day out there. Why does the bad weather seem to come in on weekends?

We've been doing a lot of walking during the week, and may go for a walk a little later today too.

But meanwhile, Rowan is fixing Machak and I'm taking photos.

My ride week is from Saturday to Thursday and road 272 miles for the week. One of my best weeks to date so decided to follow it up with my longest ride to date. Today I rode 126.5 miles with an 18.6 mph average. Ended with a heat index of 103 degrees. A couple of small showers was a welcome treat. Wind was not an issue at all. All in all a great ride. Will try to do at least 40 miles tomorrow.

The heat was hot but we rode anyway, five of us started the Goatneck 200k, three of us finished, two bailed due to heat. Rode with Sharon on the tandem.

Awful ride today. Bonked at 42 miles and finished really slow. Had to take a long hill at 46miles. The right thigh really hurt, felt like the muscle wanted to pop out of the leg. Maybe next week it will work out better.

Was going to take part in a private group ride over the RAMROD course today, but some critical elements fell apart, so cancelled. Instead, Stoker and I pulled out every stop we could find on a 60 mile ride today, set Strava PRs on every segment we rode. We had a couple of singles for company and rabbits to chase on the hills. It was a really fun ride and good consolation.

Sunday ...

Rowan and I went for our first ride in a while (it's winter here and we didn't ride at all in July). We've been walking a lot, but it felt really good to ride again.

And even better ... I rode Machak for the first time in 3 years and 4 months. It was wonderful!! He still rides beautifully. He does need a few tweaks to be in really good shape again, but it was just amazing to ride him again.

This weekend: 0 miles.
Reason: Those damn thunderstorms.

Had a 40 mile ride on monday. Went out traveling on tuesday, got back home on friday night. The storms started friday night, havent had the chance to ride ever since. Was on my way out of the door just now when I heard a familiar bouldering noise. Damn this weather.

Saturday - an endurance event just not on a bike. Went and watched a performance of Einstein on the Beach. 4 1/2 hours with no intermission!

Sunday - another 3 laps of Mt Donna Buang (16.8km 6.4% average). Total 103km 50.4km climbing. Cold and a little windy till the last lap when it also rained from about half way up!

Top of the second lap.

It rained down in the valley here, but fortunately didn't snow.
