Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Spreadsheet for logging miles

I know there are like minded folks out there that don't want to pay for a software program to track mileage, etc. but don't want to rely solely on the pad and paper, either. I'm thinking about setting up a spreadsheet, probably in Excel, to do this. Any suggestions as to how to do it? I'm thinking about a sheet for each bike, but I'm not sure how to get a calendar feel to it. I'd love to have days of the week all ready for me to log mileage into, but I'm not sure what the best way is to approach this. Again, any ideas will help me get there. Thanks much!

Try www.bikejournal.com it is already set up by date and has lots of features and you don't have to make your own. Plus it's downloadable.

It is free and there are lots of options to use. I use it and it is super, and I believe that others from this forum also use it.

Bikes: Road, touring and mountain

Pretty easy in Excel too if you want your own to play with. With the statistical features built into Excel you can set up average for week, month, quarter, whatever, as well as standard deviation, min/max miles etc. Make a tab page for each bike you wish to chart, and set up line or bar charts, you just copy the chart and formula from the first bike to the tab page for as many bikes as you wish. Save a blank on your hard drive, then next year just copy it to start the next year.

I've been evolving my Excel spreadsheet for the last 8 years.

I break the year into 13 4-week periods. Allows better comparisons because each period has 28 days and 4 weekends, unlike months.

In the primary sheet I track -

Date, Bike, Time, Miles, Avg. MPH (calculated), Cumulative Distance (by period), Cumulative Time (by period), Where I Rode, and Year to Date.

Organizing it this way allows me to have another sheet where I can compare months, mileage by bikes and a bunch of other stuff.

Pretty simple, little upkeep. I enter date, bike, time and miles after each ride, the rest takes care of itself.

I have also used bikejournal.com for the last 3 years.

I use a basic spreadsheet, keeping each year on a seperate page. I have a seperate page also for tracking repairs and maintenance on my bike, keeping it a lot easier to remember when to change a chain, get a tuneup, etc.

I have only one bike, and I'm a basic recreational rider, so mine's simpler than some. I also track weather for each ride-temperature (at end of ride), average wind speed and direction, gust wind speed and direction, and general conditions (cloudy, overcast, clear). I get my weather info from Weather Bug, which is pretty useful for me. It's interesting sometimes to go back and see how the weather was last year compared to this year, and I get a real sense for how wimpy I am (coldest ride last year 31, hottest 93 multiple times).
