Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Who's droppin weight this riding season?

Just wanted to share my joy. Started the riding season at 191-192. Hit new milestone for me of 179# yesterday after my hammerfest weekend group ride.
I'm 6'1" and now getting close to my ideal weight...I don't like to be too skinny though there is no such thing for riding a bicycle. I hate being fat but like to eat though I don't drink much alcohol.

So what have I done this year? It hasn't been due to mega miles by any means. I am at about 2.5K miles for the year...or a bit more.
I have changed my diet a bit. More fruits and vegetables and a bit less grains...but still an occasional pizza and I love ice cream.

I started a thread a while back about key to dropping weight being due to sweat and was pretty much ridiculed for it. So I will preface and say I have been sweating more on my bike this year even though I haven't been logging huge miles. How so? I have been riding harder with fast guys. So my mean heart rate when riding has likely gone up. I am pushing harder and riding faster which btw is paying dividends....I can ride faster this year with less effort...hold a higher pace without going anaerobic.

How about you guys? My target was 180 and never thought I would hit it as I haven't been this weight in about 6-7 years...and that time I was riding huge miles.

I'm "lucky" with a fast metabolism, so I don't really have to watch my diet (but I try to eat clean / good foods). I don't limit quantity though

I'm 5'9" and my off-season weight is around 155lbs (Bike less, gym more). By the end of summer (now) I'm below 150. I'd prefer if I stayed at 150, but sitting at 148lbs. What's change is biking a lot more and only hitting the gym once a week. Appetite is up, but so are my hours of activity. Although I'm skinny, I at least want some upper body mass.

You are lucky with your fast metabolism. I am old and had a fast metabolism my whole life which has progressively slowed with age. Funny about body types...skinny guys want to get beefy and fat guys want to be slim. I tell a lot of young skinny guys who want to beefy...thank your lucky stars you are guy and skinny. This body type also ages the best. The whole notion of norm about weight in America is skewed anyway since 2/3's of the population is fat. I didn't need that extra 10 lbs I was carrying around both on and off the bike and am so happy its gone.
Congrats on your fitness.

My situation is almost identical to the OP. Beginning Aug 1 I changed my diet and have been dropping weight ever since. Just incremental changes to my diet, replacing crappy food with better food i.e. fruits & veggies. This morning after my ride I clocked in at 180lbs even. Haven't been there since my late 30's. Haven't noticed a change on the bike yet.

I've dropped 8 lbs in 8 weeks riding normally by myself, but I've joined a group twice a week who ride further/ faster than my normal rides. In this time period ive cut back at the gym and increased time riding. What has been noticeable to me is my drop in upper body size / strength.

Riding in this summer Florida heat / humidity / wind is tough, and I'm sure you could follow our sweat river down the road for miles.

Im at 186 lbs and feel great (except for the mental aspect of the strength loss). Lol....just trying to keep the athletic upper body look and still be able to do some quality cycling!

I ride three or four days a week and work out another two or three, but I still can't shake the extra 5-7 pounds I've been carrying around all summer.
But damned if I'll give up eating pizza. I love pizza.

My weight yo-yo'd a bit this year.

Started out at around 175, got it down to 160. Had to take a week or two off riding for trips and went back up to 170. Clocked in this morning at 164. Hope to have it down into the 150s by my birthday (mid-September).

Steady at 168-170. Don't care to get lighter than that. I eat what I want, in reasonable portions.

I dropped about 7 lbs from my winter weight and about 3-4% body fat. I am at 2200 miles of riding and 240 miles of walking for the season.

Started year at 198. Down to 174. Need to be down at 160 or so for no fat around gut. I'm 6'3" and 43 years old. Might hit that weight by the end of the season if I can stop business travel for a while. Mostly I stopped eating junk at lunch and instead go for a 16 mile loop every day. Weekends usually do 40-60 mile ride. Otherwise just pay attention to portion sizes and eat more lean protein and complex carbs. Very little junk food and no sweet drinks other than some Gatorade once in a while. About 1600 miles in the last 4 months so nothing too heavy.

I haven't stepped onto a scale in about 8 years. About the only time I every see my weight is during a doctors visit. I just go by how my clothes fit me. About 9 months ago I was really starting to pack it on. Had to go and buy bigger pants. That was really depressing because this was about the 2nd time I found myself doing this. I'm happy to say that those pants are now WAY TOO BIG for me I'm back to fitting into some jeans that I haven't been able to wear for 8 years.

Im riding more and have lost the 10lbs that the holidays and not riding as much has in the winter has added on. This year I must show restraint at the table...

I cannot relate. I'm 6'3" and I know that if I get close to 175 my wife will start complaining that I look like a chemo patient.

I've been averaging 80-120 miles per week on a hardtail mountain bike.

I started riding intermittently late last Fall, a little bit in the Winter, but for the last 4 months I've been consistent...I'm 42yo, 5'10", and when I started I was 220#, I just cracked 210#, my target is 190~ I have a large frame...

Cardio is in nice shape. When I wake up I'm usually 105/62@ 57-62 bpm. Hopefull by late Fall I'll have gotten down to 200#.

I'll be treating myself to a Seven Cycles Axiom SL with Di2 and Shimano Hydraulic Disc brakes in the Winter and I'll be really hitting it next Spring. In the meantime I need to keep this old Cannondale I have from exploding underneath me...

Usually I have been around 160-165. Somehow got up to 185, now on my way down. Cut out the second piece of toast with cream cheese for breakfast. Two pieces of fruit for snacks. Don't eat the cookies, donuts or bagels that show up in the lunchroom at work. I run 5 miles 5 days a week, and bike 50-70 miles on Saturday and/or Sunday most weekends (usually both). I have been losing 2.5-3 pounds per week. Aiming for 160 by Columbus day weekend for a hilly ride in the Berkshires. Hauling 25 extra pounds up the hills most of the summer should at least have my legs in good shape!

Got back on road bike 13 mo ago after 13 yrs off. Was 203 lbs (i'm 6'2") at the time of my come-back. Been steadily, slowly dropping pounds (even maintained a respectable mid-to-high 190s from Thanksgiving to New Years!). Very, very happy to say that I've been 186-189 all this summer. Never, ever thought I would see the 180s again (my old racing weight in the 1980s/1990s was 180-185) especially doing it on just riding on Saturdays and Sundays with an occasional 3rd day of riding. Will probably gain a few during holidays again b/c I love sweet potato pie with vanilla ice cream but hope to keep it <200 lbs come New Years Day for the 2nd yr in a row.

I have last most of my gains since I have been off the bike since April. I have relocated and waiting for my new house to be built all my stuff is in storage including my bike. It is going to be fun tracking my progress when I am finally back on the saddle.

attempting again...
these past few seasons there have been just too many injuries and issues for me to really get where I'd like to be...
but bringing a bit more determination to the project. I'm less focused on weight than I am on 'form' - so riding more often and longer.
These past few seasons I start my cycling season in Mid-April (riding before that but less than 80 mi/wk) because of skiing. SO I'm really on the back end of the ride peloton for April, May and a bit into June. Then come the injuries
Finally healthy in August and hitting some form. Weight is down from 170 in Apr to 163, and based on the overall butterfat remaining, I'd like to get down to 158-157 and work back with a bit more upper body muscle. 162-163 was my racing weight when I was younger, but much stronger.
Every lb makes a difference these days if I want to hold the wheel of strong 20/30/40 yr olds... now if only I could climb just a bit better...

Down 10 from December, to 152. Trying to eat much less, especially carbs, Monday-Thursday, then carb up Friday and Saturday for the Sunday group ride. That's been working, including being more competitive on Sunday. 5 more and I'll weigh what I weighed when I was climbing in Yosemite in my 20s. I was a crummy climber by today's standards, though.
