Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

A couple of beers and an hour wasn't enough to ride home?

That's two very good reasons not to live in Texas. And I don't drink. It's the point of legislators and law enforcement using alcohol as an excuse to wield more power and raise revenue.

I lived there 40 years and don't have any desire to go back, except maybe when it's cold and snowing here. Maybe... I'll just ride the rollers, instead.

We have a regular "Beer Run" ride. Thirty miles to Neptune's Net on PCH. A beer and chowder and the 30 miles back. No problem and no negative effects.

1) these were IPA microbrews, not PBR; I didn't think to eat anything either
2) seems the exertion from a bike race allows you to get drunk quicker
3) I'm a fair lightweight when it comes to alcohol. Didn't drink until I was well out of college, and now, it's never more than a couple drinks a week if that.

 it is what it is. I didn't discover alcohol until I moved to Portland and tried some of the microbrews here. I've never been a fan of the domestic stuff; Bud, Miller, Coors etc. Tastes like carbonated water. Kind of the same with coffee. Until I moved to Seattle for grad school, I never really drank coffee. The difference being I drink an awful lot of coffee nowadays.

My 1st choice hangover cure is always a bike ride. So yes, I've set out on many morning rides while definitely under the previous night's influence.

And I used to bike to/from rugby training back in the day, and you never go straight home after Thursday night rugby training. It does help if most of your route home is on bike paths, though.

"a few hours later"?!?! Why bother? Either get your buzz on and ride, or do something else that day. Cycling is two completely different experiences when sober and when not...but when you're neither, it's just sucks.

That's an important point.

Not "under influence", but rather a bit hangover today and still went for a 40km ride. Wasn't the best idea, but still fun.

What was tough in the first kilometers were all the road bumps that managed to resonate in my head, but then the Advil finally made its job
