Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Best cycling song EVER?!

Ok, so back in my mis-spent youth I thought this song was about trippin' your nads off. I mean, ecce signum, right? And, in fact, it is one of the all-time great descriptions of... that.

But in my middle aged wisdom I've come to see, hell's bells y'all, it's not just A cycling song but maybe THE cycling song. I mean there's a veritable gold mine of .sig lines here!

To wit:

The wheel is turning and you can't slow down,
You can't let go and you can't hold on,
You can't go back and you can't stand still,
If the thunder don't get you then the lightning will.

Wont you try just a little bit harder,
Couldnt you try just a little bit more?
Wont you try just a little bit harder,
Couldnt you try just a little bit more?

Round, round robin run round, got to get back to where you belong,
Little bit harder, just a little bit more,
A little bit further than you gone before.

The wheel is turning and you can't slow down,
You can't let go and you can't hold on,
You can't go back and you can't stand still,
If the thunder don't get you then the lightning will.

Small wheel turn by the fire and rod,
Big wheel turn by the grace of god,
Every time that wheel turn round,
Bound to cover just a little more ground.

This is like the Jeopardy answer "The Last Remake of Beau Geste", a Mel Brooks film. The question "What is the last remake of Beau Geste".

There can be only one answer - The Bicycle Song

Long Tom, that's a great song and ya just gotta love the Dead, but when I think of the term 'cycling song', I tend to think of the several that seem to embed themselves into my head for entire training sessions.

For whatever reason, two that quite often seem to show up are 'Riders on the Storm', and 'King of Pain'. Hmmmm....wonder if there's some deeper meaning there....

Ya mon.... I should have clarified: I think the lyrics for The Wheel are awesome for cycling. But the song, maybe too boisterous.

See, this is what a mis-spent youth will do. Lack of clarity. You youngin's out there, you study hard and walk the straight and narrow, y'hear?

I don't listen to music while cycling- trying to hear cars in my rural AO. However skiing, that's another story. I gots some great music for when you ade standing up top that steep deep black diamond, doing the nut-check <grin>...

Haha, I was totally going to post this. I've been known to sing this or Queen's Bicycle Race to myself while out riding by myself.

When it immediately precedes drums-->space it is about something else entirely. It is a favorite song of Teemu Selanne.
Reminds me of good times at Alpine....

Alpine, you say? I was at Alpine in.... uh.... '89? It was the year it turned into a mud bog the last day.

We hooked up with, and I kid you not, this stretch-van of people from Cinci... 11 women and one dude... followed them back to Cinci and partied with them for a week or so. Had to leave before our peckers got worn plumb off.

Man... good times.... sigh....
