Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Flatlander in the hills of Switzerland

I'm in Switzerland for two weeks and have rented a bike for the first week. We're staying in a villa that has a 200 ft climb just to get to the door. I'm sure that's nothing compared to what many of you are used to but for me these hills sure change the ride. It seems I am constantly either sitting in the granny gear pushing my way up a climb or flying down the other side trying to stay alive. I'm used to near zero elevation change and having the ability to just pound out the miles at a constant heart rate & power. It's a lot of fun but a real learning experience. Another issue is remembering where I am when I'm riding and how to get back to where I began. There are signs everywhere with cycling route numbers etc. but for now I'm content to just head out in straightish lines for X minutes and then turn around and come back.

About 150 to get up my street for me... with a few patches of 15/16%

Welcome to "real" cycling! And for pete's sake, take some pictures.

I've got plenty of pics of Switzerland, just not many cycling pics. I did wear the GoPro one day and got this pic, but that day our route was not that scenic, mostly past cow pastures etc. Plus the elevation is hard to pick up on photos.
