Closing the Angle past 90, cycling after a total hip replacement
Hi I'm fairly new to cycling, I've been at it about a year now. Just when I was starting to feel pretty quick I needed a total hip due to AVN (the veins in the femoral head died and the bone collapsed). I had the surgery done on October 2nd in Miami. They did an anterior incision. My physical therapist says it will be months before I can get back to doing any sort of activity on a bike that closes the angle between my calf and abdomen. Does anyone have any experience with a THR and getting back on a road bike? I'm riding the stationary "recumbent" bike at the gym now but obviously this sucks.

my nice bike is at home
Hi I had a re-surfaced hip Not a THR and was on my indoor Mag- trainer about two weeks post op. It was winter so no hurry. Then I went out on the road in about 4 weeks. They actually encouraged just about any kind of movement but scolded me about lifyting anything over 40-50 lbs.
Have a good recovery, don't be in too much of a hurry. Congrats on your new hip, been great for me so far hope for you too!

Calf and abdomen or thigh and abdomen?

I had a hip replacement , posterior approach and yes they emphasize the 90 rule but look carefully at just how little you actually flex the hip. I was riding at a month with no problems. I ride as hard and long as I want now. The only trouble is the other side is telling me it wants a new one too.

I'm not familiar with any hip replacement but hip angle... move the saddle forward and raise it appropriately to maintain or even raise saddle height. This will keep your leg from coming up as far.

I had THR in late February. I was in great shape before surgery but also was experiencing tremendous pain after exercise and also reduced mobility. Post surgery, I was restricted from all exercise (except walking) for 8 weeks. I am now riding stronger than ever. I am still a percent or two slower than last year, but that won't be the case for long. I had anterior surgery that lasted 2 hours. It was treatment for osteoarthritis on my left femur. I am also back to playing basketball 2-3 times per week as well. Thanks to modern medicine, my surgeon, and my titanium hip.
