Does anyone have an opinion on the TREK 5000
I would value opinions on the 2004 or 2005 Trek 5000. Are there better bikes for the money?

yes - Giants
Trek 5000s were whipped together mid season at the last minute to compete with Giant TCR2s last year... the frame itself isn't bad - but it isn't the "better bike for the money" and the components are downgraded.
it is still a fine rig tho

Depends on what you want it for... There really is not a BEST frame for the money... Go test ride one.

From April through September I ride around 120 miles per week not including several road rallys and the Hotter than Hell 100. I don't race competitively (except among friends). I have the opportunity to pick up the 5000 for $1675.

I have that frame on my '2004' 5200. My last bike(which I sold because the fit wasn't right) was a Giant TCR Composite O. Anyway...I love the Trek Carbon frame and I have no regrets buying it. It's a very light and comfortable frame. I think a good set of wheels and the right components always bring out the very best in a good frame.....so it is always important what specs you are getting with your frame.
The Giant TCR 2 is aluminum..so I don't think it compares to the Trek 5000 carbon frame. Perhaps the Giant TCR Composite 2 is an equal or better machine? Giant does make some fine carbon bikes.
Anyway...I'm a happy Trek carbon frame owner! If you can get Ultegra or 105 with this frame then you will be a satisfied cyclist. Plus...the Bontrager line of wheels are very solid.

Obviously a Giant fan. I love my 2005 5000. It's a solid ride, responds well and is very nimble. The Ultegra and SRAM make for a good, solid drive train. In my opinion, aluminum does not compare to carbon. Ride one and choose for yourself.

Why do you say it is overpriced? That is a quality full carbon frame with a great warranty and track record and has been ridden to two Tour de France wins. It's light and offers a smooth ride. What about the frame 'technically' that makes it overpriced? You have got to do better than 'it is unchanged for how long' or 'it has been produced for a long time'...give us something specific? I have ridden the Giant TCR composite O and I can say that the frame was a bit lighter than my current Trek 5200....but the Trek is every bit as smooth..and I enjoy riding, training, and racing on it just as much. Is the Giant TCR frames with same or near same components really selling at a signifigant discount to the Trek? If that is the case then yes the Giant carbon frames will offer a better value...because they are good quality frames. I know because I owned one before I bought my Trek 5200. That said...I know from experience..having owned and ridden both Trek and Giant carbon frames..that they are both excellent! I cannot find any reason..based on my own personal experience with both frames...to say that the Trek carbon is grossly over priced...and I also know that Trek carbon is competitive with Giant carbon in regards to quality. I don't have a bias as you seem to have.
