Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bikes: 2002 TCR 2 w/ Shimano 105 5800

Need some help

Hey guys, so I used to own a 2002 Giant TCR2 that i loved to death, however i ended up selling it to purchase a motorcycle and am now greatly regretting that decision lol Anywho, I am once again looking to buy another road bike. I am trying to stay under $500 so im looking used and came across a 2000 (?) Schwinn Super Sport SL for $500 and what wondering if its a decent bike and if its worth the $500.

Thanks!

-Andrew

Bikes: Super Cheap gc3 approved Bike

You're going from a Giant composite to a Schwinn steel? You sure that's what you want to buy?

I wouldn't pay $500 for used steel. You can buy an aluminum frameset with Sora Group set for same price.

I'm not saying aluminum is better, but if you're looking for a similar ride for $500 as your Giant TCR2, steel definitely isn't it. Aluminum hydroformed with oversized headset, downtube, with bent seat stays, throw in carbon seatpost, and you got a bike that is much closer to your previous Giant.

I would look for a used Specialized Allez, Masi Partenza, Trek 1.2 for example and buy a carbon seatpost. Get a Pro Vibe 7S stem, with it's 10 degree angle, to get a more aggressive position on the bike, to get something more similar to TCR2. Maybe replace the fork with a straight one? Allez compact probably your best bet for $500.

Thanks a ton for the response. Didnt notice the steel frame, and yea i was thinking i might be happier with a compact frame. I just couldnt find a ton of info on the bike, quality wise, lots of good info thought, thank you. Now the TCR had 105 all around, and i loved it, how are the sora and tiagra components? What difference would i notice?

One more question, Im selling my mtn bike (2013 Giant revel 0 29er) to fund my new road bike, and was offered a 2009 Felt F95 team issue as a trade, purchased new last year (has receipts), and supposedly has two rides on it totaling about 40 miles. Is this worth it?
