Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Got in 500 miles. Given the kind of January it was, that's not bad, if I say so myself.

One crash on the ice.

Happily, I was able to ride all three days the 31st through the 2nd. All rides were on the fixed gear, but since I have no odometer on it, I can only guess that the mileage was ~40, ~20 and ~18 mi respectively. The temps rose steadily from the high 30s on Friday to the mid 50s on Sunday. My bike is now fully spattered with salty brine residue from the melting show/ice. It needs a good cleaning.

Saturday was the first sunny day in awhile. I got in a nice 37 miles on a MUP. However, I felt a little strange. Very dehydrated and had trouble generating any energy. Sunday another beautiful day, but now I'm feeling sick. Arghhhh! It's a conspiracy to keep me from riding.

It's amazing what a difference hydration can make!

Well, I was drinking like a maniac on the Saturday's ride. I just felt like I couldn't get enough. I won't bore you with my medical conditions lets just say I was having a flare up of a chronic GI issue that lasted through Sunday. Another beautiful potential riding day wasted.

February 1 started out badly. I had a nice 60 mile loop planned including three of the bigger climbs in my area. All ready to test out the winter legs. Picked up my buddy, drove the 40 minutes to the starting point to meet a few others. Bike off the roof rack, chatting with folks,.... Oh (#&*$!! ... left my shoes at home. Luckily someone else was able to give my friend a ride home afterwards. At least they had fun.

But I made up for it on Sunday. No groundhog day experience for me this year. I drove out to Skyline Drive and got in 63 miles and 6500 feet of climbing. It took 42 miles before the 50th car passed by (counting from both directions). 30 cars an hour up there is usually a quiet day. Byrd Visitor Center was open with hot coffee and hot chocolate. Temps ranged from the mid-40's to low-50's. The road was completely clean and mostly dry. They don't use salt or sand on the Drive. Only downside was I did not see a single other cyclist.

A truly beautiful day.

And now for a few pictures.....
