Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I've been passed by people draggin on cigarettes. Granted this was downtown but ok. I have come to the conclusion that smoking boosts your performance. Like what NOS does to a car.

Well.... Umpteen years ago the riders on the Tour used to light up before Mountain stages to open up their lungs... but the cumulative damage of smoking absolutely outweighs any very short term temporary gains... I'm actually working to build my lung capacity back up after years of smoking. (I quit almost 2 years ago). Ouch.

Lighting the cigarette while pedaling down the road may suddenly end your performance on the road - especially while striking a match on your frame.

Then there are all the brush fires you start that get smoke in your eyes and nose.

After smoking on and off for years I had a doctor friend of mine do a lung capacity test and my lung capacity was above average! Maybe it was because my fitness level was above average.

So how long does it take to repair damaged lungs?

My sister was a state champ in track and cross country in high school and a smoker to boot. Even after 10+ years of smoking, she can still outrun me. I hate her for that. On the other hand, she's spent $1000's on cigarettes and wakes up evey morning with a nasty cough. At least I'm faster on a bike.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again:

Always choose the more addictive and more expensive option: bike racing.

Smoking is for the weak. Oh sure, it's addictive, but it doesn't cost nearly as much as cycling.
Go big or go home.

Kind of reminds me when I go to the gym and there's somebody standing outside waiting to finish their cigarette before going in. I just don't get it... I'm still waiting for somebody to give me a good reason why you'd want to start that disgusting habit anyway.

Ciggies won't help much. PCP on the other hand will give you an extra 40mph for several hours. If you're gonna smoke, smoke some dust

that reminds me -- Almost nothing beats a death metal song about Angel Dust , here's "Angel Dust" by Venom:
---------------

Living
Running
Out on the streets at night
Searching
Hoping
For the right connection, 'cause
I Need it, want it
You know I've got to have it
Takes me higher than anything I know

Angel dust
Need a shot to see me through the day
Angel dust
Want a lot --- I've got to get away!!

I live my life
Like there's no tomorrow
Take no
Chances
I'm drowning all my sorrows 'cause
I Need it, want it
You know I've got to have it
Takes me higher than anything I know

Laughing
Crying
Every night and day
I know
You know
That I'm a different man because I
Need it, want it
You know I've got to have it
Takes me higher than anything I know

----------------

Lighten up dude, the question was rhetorical. Anyone stupid enough tho think that smoking has any benefits to cycling (or anything for that matter) whatsover would clearly be incapable of operating one of these new-fangled computer thingies to access this forum.

Not sure how long it takes but mine are feeling better every year. I quit four years ago cold turkey after smoking 2 - 3 packs a day for eight years. I ended up gaining some weight but I would much rather be fat than have cancer. I started riding bikes to reward myself for quitting. I figured if I was riding I wouldn't smoke, if I smoked I couldn't ride. It has worked for me.

The question is, what could she have accomplished with her obvious talent if she hadn't smoked? That she'll never know.

Has anyone else ever seen someone throw out a cigarrette while at a stop light and wanted to pick up the cigarrette and throw it back in their car? Just figured they would appreciate that, after all they must have accidentally dropped it right?

We have a house that backs up to the bike path just east of our home. Evidently, they do not smoke in their home, but prefer to smoke in the back yard, throwing the butts on the bike/walking path. Every time we walk by their back yard there is a new load of butts. Disgusting to me and my wife, and rather dangerous if the butts were to be picked up by some of the small children in the area.

I have the urge to throw them back in their yard, but don't really want to touch those disgusting butts!
