Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Buy 2 bikes instead of one

Whenever anyone starts a thread about buying a new expensive bike, there's always a post about how it's conspicuous consumption, and the money could go to charity.

Setting aside, the validity of that argument, I've got a suggestion to assauge any liberal guilt you may have from a new bike purchase and do some good when you buy a new bike.

Buy Two; one for yourself, and one to help a person in Africa.

For $134, World Bicycle Relief can provide a bike to a person in Africa that will provide mobility that will change that person's life.

If just the people posting in the 41 did this everytime they threw down $3000 plus on a new bike, it would make a difference.

I like that. Very good, but we are a very greedy society.. while I may see some people helping I'm sure 99% won't.

What if they follow the other suggestion of buying a cheaper bike and then some hookers and blow?

Do you have a system for that?

Its really eye opening when you start thinking that that $134 won't even pay for half a pair of the bibs alot of guys wear.

The Barracuda web filter at work blocks those links. I'll have to work on that at home.

Up with the 1%!

What happens when local warlords confiscate all the donated bikes, like they do every other damn piece of charity that goes to Africa?

They plate them in gold and ride them around shooting their gold plated uzis.

Aw yeah!

Gold plated AK is the way to go though. And this one's an AK pistol! Totally portable!

Yeaaaaah, that view might be a wee bit simplistic.

Bikes: Expensive ones that I ride slowly

Here's one where some bicycles and a cyclist did some good:

It's also on Netflix.
