Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

# of chain links for a 1x9 setup??

Assuming a 1(60t)x9(11-23) setup is possible how many chain links do I need?
kmc chains come with 116 and wippermann chains come with 114

It depends on chain stay length.

Chain length in inches is approximately chain stay length (measured between axle and bottom bracket centers), multiplied by 2 (top and bottom), plus big ring tooth count / 4 (it wraps about half the ring, and 1" pitch chain has two half lengths with matching teeth per inch), plus big cog count / 4, plus an inch for the derailleur.

Multiply by 2 to get the half-link count which is how chain makers count.

I got 53.75 so that translates to 107.5 links right?
n does the derailleur only take up 1" of the chain?

Bikes: Felt Brougham, Lotus Prestige, Cinelli Xperience,

With an online chain calculator, I got 56 links (112 pitches) with 60x23 and a 410 chain stay. And yes, 1" is the minimum a derailleur needs. If you google "chain length calculator" you can play with the numbers directly.

And for what it is worth, with a 1x9, you will need as means to keep the chain from falling off the crank sprocket. I know from first hand experience. You didn't ask, but figured I'd offer.
