Just wanted to give a thumbs up for Psimet and other guys who do give out good info on here despite getting the typical 41 treatment constantly.

you know what else i find hard doing while riding? Eating.

That's actually really sad. Sure seems like psimet was really trying to help you and you just will not listen. Free coaching and all he asked for was 20min of your time :/

I hope one day if I think I am as awesome as you are I keep it to myself and not look like a moron on the internet

I find sleeping hard to master while riding. Though it is much easier on my recumbent trike.

I have a hard time reading a book while riding. Is there a trick to keep the pages from flapping around in the wind?

Ride backwards. Your body will block the wind.

If you use a smartphone as a bike computer, just change the display to the book reader...

No, no, no. They he won't be able to dial it up to 400W.

You guys are obviously smarter than Hunter Allen, Andy Coggan, Chris Carmichael etc. They are the ones who came up with the methods of estimating FTP using durations shorter than 60 minutes. I didn't just make this stuff up.

Riiight, you're right, and everyone else is WRONG.

OK, Einstein, which one of these is what you're using to lie to yourself and allow you to say your FTP is around 300W?

How to determine your Functional Threshold Power
In decreasing order of reliability:
  1. from the average power during a ~1 h TT (the best predictor of performance is performance itself).
  2. from the power that you can routinely generate during long intervals done in training.
  3. using critical power testing and analysis.
  4. based on normalized power from a hard ~1 h race.
  5. from blood lactate measurements (better or worse, depending on how it is done).
  6. from power distribution profile from multiple rides.
  7. from inspection of a ride file.
Note the key words "hard", "routinely", and "average" in methods 1, 2, and 4.
Got the stones to explain your "logic"?

You can't even hit 300W for 10 flipping minutes and you think your FTP is over 280?

What's the color of the sky on your planet? Cuz it sure ain't blue.

We are dealing with an individual with a cognitive deficit.

i thought you weren't coming back?

your fellow riders are probably going harder to shut you up.

Dunbar 03-17-14 12:42 PM

I'll take Andy Coggan's word over anyone in this thread. He's actually demonstrated that he knows what he's talking about.

achoo 03-17-14 12:44 PM

Oh, yeah. To give you an idea about how accurate those are, the best NP I've done in an hour race is about 330W, but it wasn't hard. I've done NPs up around 370W for an hour.

And MY FTP is right around 300W.

So by the time you get down to #4 , it's pretty damn inaccurate.

Unlike you.

Please explain how you get the whacked idea that you have an FTP around 300W when you can't hold 250W for an hour.

Explain that.

Because you can do 283W for 10 minutes? That's WORTHLESS in predicting FTP.

Nah, that's an insult to those with cognitive deficits.

More like an anencepahilic howler monkey.

Only if you read him selectively to support your untenable conclusion. If you read him with any care at all, his "word" does not support your position.

Stop trying to win this argument by appealing to an authority whose writings are not consistent with your claim.

Well, just stop. Please? Stop.

I prefer to estimate based on my 10s power.

therhodeo 03-17-14 12:53 PM

Also appealing to the authority of Chris "extract of cortisone" Carmichael is a joke.

popeye 03-17-14 01:03 PM

I think we are being too hard on Dunbar. He does not have enough data to come to any conclusions about this physical prowess without more data and how much he weighs. We do know he can put out 300w for some time but at that level I would expect his 5 sec to be over a KW and it looks like he is just quits at ~15 min. Dunbar come back with more data, you can handle the abuse and we can play some more. PM's are a humbling device.

It's called an NP buster. See link below. If your NP from a 1h race was really 23% above FTP that makes you an extreme outlier. I suspect your FTP is set low.

Because the experts here on the 41 have demonstrated such superior knowledge of the subject matter...

You've demonstrated absolutely no knowledge other than an ability to post links.

What makes you think you have an FTP higher than 250W? Your ability to do 283W for ten minutes? How about you take 83% of the average of your third through sixth interval?

What's the highest 60-minute average power you've posted?

Dunbar 03-17-14 01:28 PM

We started in this thread with my FTP obviously being 210 to 220. Now we're up to 250. I'm using 280 and the CP model puts me at 270. I don't think I'm grossly overestimating my FTP. When I get a chance to test it I will.
