Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Quiet trainer suggestions?

I'm off the road for six weeks due to a medical procedure but my doc says I can start on a trainer in about two weeks. I have a Cycleops Mag trainer but it's noisy as hell and I have housemates now and I'm upstairs. So, I'm looking at maybe upgrading my trainer. Any suggestions for a fluid trainer that's relatively quiet and affordable, if possible? I'll likely sell my Cycleops on Craigslist. It's in perfect condition. Thanks.

Well the Cyclops Super Magneto is the quietest trainer I've ever been on, even more quiet than most of the fluid's I've been on. Most of the better fluid's are pretty quiet though. On my Super Magneto I was surprised that I was able to ride behind my wife who was working and watching tv and she had no complaints (which is abnormal for her when I'm being loud )

My fluid trainer is only annoyingly loud when I up the speed on the wheel. It's the KK Rock n' Roll (Gen 1) Under 18mph at the wheel is not too bad. I think the wheel is the loudest part.

CycleOps Fluid+ is pretty quiet. As stated, with mag or fluid almost all the noise comes from your bike and tire.

Cheers

Get a Kurt Kinetic Road Machine and use a dedicated trainer tire. That makes a huge difference.

Thanks for the tips. I'm going to search out a magneto and try it out.

Tagging this thread. Been jogging in winter when I could not ride, and hated every minute of it.

Odds are that you'll hate your trainer too. Most of us do. Why can't you ride in the winter? Go on over to the winter cycling forum - you'd be surprised what conditions are rideable if you have the right gear.

Thanks for the suggestion. You are probable right, and I will not like the trainer. I was already kind of suspecting that. I have the gear to ride in winter. The only thing that keeps me inside is snow, ice and heavy rain. This last winter we only experienced the latter, but still so frequently that I often went for a jog. I can cycle for a long time and not be bored. After 15 minutes of jogging I find myself trying to speed up because I want it to be over with.
