Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Caad4 Aero

Just acquired this awesome cheap CAAD4 Aero frame. I'm confused about the exact model and year, maybe you can help? I could've posted this on C&V, but figured it's not that old. Has anyone ridden or done any racing on these with drop bars(non TT/Tri mode)?

It has a 1" head tube(right now it's shimmed with 1 1/8 stem), from what I read online this means it might be a 2000. Some photos show bikes with similar colours but with the model name R(number) on the top tube. This has no model names whatsoever. I first thought this is a tri bike, but it does not say "Multisport" on the top tube.

If this geo chart I found is correct, then it's close to a Cervelo R5! High bottom bracket, reasonably short chainstays and wheelbase but slack front end and some trail. I want to build it with drop bars, new campy and nice wheels and ride and race the heck out of it. Stupid idea?

This will give you all the info you need. There is a serial number decoder as well as scans of the catalogs.

Can't find it anywhere in the 1999 catalogues... Looks just like the Saeco TT bikes that I see on some sites except for the paint job. Fork and the logos match. It is not a multisport, no way this bike has a 78 degree seat tube. If I put a seat post and a saddle on it it's nowhere near the BB line.

If you ask my wife I have a small Cdale problem from a '98 XS800 to '14 EVO.
The CAAD4 (and most of the CAAD frames are very stiff. I have never seen one used as a race bike. However, with aero being the rage now, I don't see why not.
The site has a lot of valuable information on it.
