Stylish Roadie Helmet - suggestions
In market for a new helmet. Like something with style. Not wanting one of those areo TT alien helmets
something good for road and even mt biking with. Good vents like to stay away from those funny helmets something sleek looking thanks all |
If you want stylish, you're going to need a different sport.
|
I'm going with the Giro Reverb this year. Enough of the alien helmets. And it will look good with my Ray-Bans.

I like my Dux Helm, particularly for the retractable, easily changeable visor, but I think it's good-looking, too:
http://fcdn.mtbr.com/attachments/app...1-thickbox.jpg I do have a soft spot for the styling of the Casco Speed Airo, though, and would like to have one in my ownership: |

I'm also looking for a new helmet for the summer season that looks great.
I'm looking at this Bell Sweep right now. It comes with a removable visor and plugs so it can be used for road or MTB. http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=371911 |
I find the Kask helmets to be the best looking on the market. I have the Vertigo and it fits better than any helmet I have tried.
|
Doesn't get any better...
http://d4nuk0dd6nrma.cloudfront.net/...98435405_n.jpg Btw, anyone know if the Dux Helm visor fits over (in front of) eyeglasses? |
IMHO, I think Kask make the best looking helmets on the market. They also fit my head the best out of every helmet I've ever tried. I tried on the K.50, which is no longer available. It was sleek and fit well. When I need a new helmet, I'm going with a Kask. The downside, is they charge for their style and finish. I also think their TT helmet looks the best (Bambino), but does not vent well from what I understand. Their new semi-aero helmet was on my radar until I saw how "mushroomy" they were on the riders from Sky's heads. Their regular helmets have the lowest mushrooming effect of any helmet I've tried on as well.
Casco Speed looks real good. It looks like track cycling meeting road. I wouldn't mind having one. |

I love my Giro Aeon. I always forget I'm even wearing it, and I think it's one of the best looking out there. You can always find good deals on them too if you look around.

I'm looking at this Bell Sweep right now. http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=371911 Because they've been around for so many years, often you can find a leftover from a previous year at a deeply discounted price. |
I use a Bell sweep also, and I really like it.

I want a helmet with a visor myself so that I can wear cycling specific perscription glasses while riding.
That would be great for charity rides where I stop more often and at times have to look at unfamiliar route sheets. Like the Casco helmets the best, no US supplier though. There is a track/velo store in Chicago that comes up as a dealer, may call them. Like the Casco Speedster in white: http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=371965 Like the SPEEDairo too in matt black: http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=371966 http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=371967 |

Okay, so this guy is about to spend a week at a ranch in Wyoming. He's never worn a cowboy hat so when he's trying them on in the western store thinks they look enormous and utterly ridiculous on him with their huge brims and so he buys the shortest-brimmed hat in the place. Of course, when he gets to the ranch he's the one who looks utterly ridiculous in his little short-brimmed hat and stands out like the dude he really is.
Then there's this other guy who thinks road cycling helmets look utterly ridiculous... HD |

On Point
OP, aubiecat and BoSoxYacht are bringing up a good choice. I have two Bell Sweep helmets, a very old white one and a newer black and silver one. Sure, its swoopy as most road helmets are, but like BoSoxYacht says, it comes with a visor for MTB riding and it's well ventilated. Bell changes color schemes yearly and discounted models are priced right.
Performance Bike runs sells on them too sometimes. gridplan, that Kask is the business! LBS carries Kask, held a few, they are sharp. No visor for MTB on the models they had in stock, but for a pure road helmet, they looked great, felt light weight. |

To the OP: all road helmets look kind of unusual. The more vented and aero they are, usually the more unusual they look. I recommend going to your LBS shop, trying a few on, and simply buy whatever you like best. Just because someone else finds it comfortable or attractive doesn't mean you will like it, the only way to know for sure is to try them on. |

That drop down visor is one of the reasons I bought my scorpion motorcycle helmet. I may have to look into this for the bike since wearing sunglasses when hot get my eyes burning with sweat
I guess if it's really your eyes that get hot though, it's probably not as hot as close fitting sports glasses. FWIW, my go-to summer helmet the past season or two has been an Uvex Boss Race. It's pretty standard styling, but light, trim, cool, and nicely appointed with features like bug mesh, two-tone straps, easily adjustable fit system, and a nice chin buckle. http://static.jensonusa.com/images/D...6/HE265B02.jpg |
I temporarily lost my Bell Volt so I bought a Catlike Whisper. Then of course I found the Bell. Both fit well, are lightweight and brightly colored to improve my visibility.
It gets too hot here for me to wear those bmx-styled helmets. More vents means more air, keep that in mind when choosing a helmet. |

Now there are those who claim that, for example, the Giro Air Attack is just as cool as a more vented helmet, which makes a case for airflow management being even supreme to shell venting. Seems hard to believe, but I don't know, it could be true! |
I like the Giro Atmos. It has lots of vents which is what I need for cycling in Florida and it’s really light. You should be able to find one for about $150. I tried a Lazer Genesis and loved the way it looked but couldn’t get used to the heavier weight. That’s the problem with getting a really light helmet as your first one. Once you get used to that weight it’s hard to go heavier.
