Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Is it wrong to want these shoes?

I'm thinking of dropping three Benjamin's on these shoes. I've been coveting them since they came out a year or so ago. I like wearing brightly colored gear because I think it helps driver's see you better but I also really think these are hot.

I have three pair of Sidis. Two that I bought 15 years ago, a MTB pair that's gotten a lot of use and are in pretty decent shape. A road bike pair that's hardly been used and currently serves as my spinning bike pair and my everyday road shoes are Genius 5 carbons which are still in great shape and probably the best pair I've ever owned. These are a want not a need but I definitely want. They were $499 last year and I'm thinking of waiting a bit longer to see if the price goes down more. I need to work harder to pay for my habit, though. I mean I'm saving up for new wheels, too.

If you need new shoes, why not get those? Shoes, and saddles are areas where you should never base your decisions on cost. Fit/comfort is most important.

A friend picked up a pair of those a few months ago, and he loves them.

If they fit and work well, and you have the disposable income, what the heck. FWIW, SIDIs have not fit/worked well for me in the past.

Just get 'em..If your collection gets to big sell the older ones. Or give them to some kid just starting out. When you consider the cost per ride for a pair of shoes and how long they last it's not a big deal.

Never wrong to want and get if you can afford. Who cares you you need them or not. Its when you can't afford but get anyway. I say pull the trigger if you can!

No, not at all. I'm a college kid without much income, but I still won't cheap out for shoes and bib shorts/saddle. Okay, I do wait for sales, but I still buy the nice stuff. I believe if I can keep my bum and feet happy, I can get just about anywhere. Last year I got ride of my bottom of the line Shimano shoes for Sidi Ergo 3s. Huge step up and I regret nothing. Yeah they were expensive even though I shopped for the cheapest pair, but riding has become so much more enjoyable. Some people say that's not true, but considering I couldn't ride 10 miles in the Shimano shoes without having foot pain for a week, and now I can ride 70 miles in the Sidis and not have any foot pain - it is immensely more enjoyable. And, yes, I tried about every cleat position I could get on my Shimano shoes - nothing. My feet would go numb for days after a short ride. I thought about pitching in an extra $50 and upgrading to the Wires, but opted for the Ergo 3s. Truth be told, I think the Ergo 3 in red with white buckles are the best looking shoes on the market, so I opted for them. If the Ergo 3 didn't have such a desirable look, I probably would've gone with the ones pictured or the white/red Wires.

When I was driving only the Triple Bypass ride in Colorado last year I saw a lot of those Wires pictured above. I could pick them out from a descending pack from a peak across the valley.

P.S. I have had a thing for yellow fluo for years. Now that it is available in just about any top tier kit and shoes, I want all of it. So purchase those Wires. I might save up some cash just to pop on a pair if I hear they are going to discontinue them.

I'd say that you work for the money you spend and what you buy is your business, and no one else's. And seeing as I want a pair, too, black please, it would be hypocritical to say no for your buying them. Anywho, after what you just went through, buy them and enjoy them, just post pics when you buy them.

I can't wear sidi's. Too narrow for my feet.

I'm saddened by posts like OP's. Commodity fetishism totally superceding the pleasure of cycling.

This post makes me sad. As if liking the gear somehow means I don't enjoy the purity of cycling. Phooey.

If you enjoyed the 'purity of cycling' so much you wouldn't need $500 neon yellow shoes.

Need? Wow. Seriously? Your word not mine. It must be nice to be able to sit in judgment of what and how people should interpret what is pure and what isn't. I imagine being perfect is exhausting. I promise I won't judge your need not to buy $500 shoes. Sheesh. Yawn. Sigh.

How to bait posters:

1. ask a question as if you really want an answer

2. praise everyone who says you should buy them

3. throw a hissy fit if anyone dares to suggest that you don't need 4 or 5 or 6 pairs of $500 shoes.

4. Bask in glory of winning an internet argument. Success!

The correlation between saddle comfort and price is somewhere between imperfect and non-existent. The most comfortable saddle I've ever owned was a pleather avocet saddle I picked up for $6. Liked it so much I bought another for my mtb as well as my road.

Also, sidi's run very narrow. I find that even sizing up 1 or 2 sizes doesn't work for me.

Don't choose shoes because they are neon yellow or because they're sidi's or because they are $500.

Choose shoes because they fit you.

For the record, I have extremely narrow feet and Sidis are the best fit. But really, I'm not gonna apologize for liking the color of a shoe or even for lusting after them. You are so sure of my motivations, that you've lumped me into some ridiculous generalized category that's based on your apparent close study of the Internets. Dude, maybe I'm bored. Maybe, due to forces out of my control, I'm sitting around on the first perfect spring day of the year wishing I could get on my bike and ride and not being able to. Btw, the "is it wrong" title of this thread: not being serious there, bud. I didn't realize I had to explain that. Sheesh.

If this thread bothers you so much, skip it. I can assure you my interest in these shoes has zero correlation to my pure love of cycling, a love that is so great I could never put it into words. Like I said earlier, yawn, sigh. Please, have the last word. I've already spent way too much time on this. Time I could better spend looking for more cool, expensive gear to buy so I can continue to ruin the sport for you.

There are many, many brands of cycling shoes that would fit your extremely narrow feet. I have tried several of them, and most of them cost far less than $500.

Same applies in your case. If you don't like my reply, just skip it. Take your own advice, buddy.

If you want the shoes, just buy them. No need to waste your time justifying the purchase to me or anyone else.

You obviously don't want any opinions that are not in agreement with your own, so it's quite dangerous to ask for opinions on the internet where people can disagree with you. Amazing how that works, isn't it? Perhaps the following site would work better for you:

Thanks for proving my point fit/comfort is most important when choosing shoes and a saddle. An expensive saddle or pair of shoes that doesn't fit the rider is worthless to that person.

Expensive or cheap, if it fits I have no problem using it.
