Why is road cycling so political and middle class?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

If you are looking at colleges for your son and can endure the Baptist way of life, it might be a place to look at. Falwell U is rolling in the dough. Beautiful campus, beautiful area and a great place to ride bikes.
I don't personally know anyone at Liberty, but I think @Doug28450 's kid that is a competitive triathlete was looking at that school for that reason.

I think they have a wealthy backer that gives them everything they need. Kind of like the guy who gave UR 12 million? to start a LAX program so his 2 sons could play there. That is some heavy money. The tri guy says LU has their own team bus and a setup just like the pro teams. I think they are also very connected with Endorphin Fitness. Have you ever been to LU's campus? Man, that is a pretty campus! The athletic facilities are top notch also. If a person was having to choose between a scholly from there or some other mid level NCAA school it would be hard to turn down. The Falwell way of life might be a deal breaker though.

I have/do spend a lot of time in Europe. Mostly related to my job, but find excuses around my kids sports - soccer and cycling. I would do adventures on long weekends, during races and between games. The hello thing is very regional, as is what is middle-class, something some countries don't have so much of, while others are generally all that way (it appears).

In the same company a branch manager (so assuming similar compensation) in the Netherlands rides his bike to work, and the other is in a nice Benz/Audi. I don't think they wave in either case.

But to the leg wave topic:

- Do we have a Nodding thread?

"I am a nodder, That is, I like to nod and get a nod back from other bikers. Some do, some don't and it's ok either way.

However I can't get my head round bikers that stick their leg out to cars (or bikes) that they pass. Have you seen that?

Not only does it look naff (in my humble opinion) it also suggests they are too frightened to take a hand off the bars to give a friendly wave. Or am I missing something?

If you showed up for a baseball game in a football uniform people would look at you funny too. If I stop by the shops in my lycra/spandex and funny shoes, while out on a ride, I get lots of looks from the general public (non riders), too. Just deal with it. Bottom line, wear what you want, and carry on.
