Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

AMGEN Tour of California

I live right on the border of LA and Pasadena where the race is ending on the last stage. Definitely heading out to see Cavendish and Sagan battle it out.

Anyone else going to be out there?

I bike commute to work in Pasadena... so maybe! But isn't it on Saturday?

Do you do any of the local rides?

T of C ends in Westlake Village, Stage 8 does Rock Store circuits, next Sunday. Note that race starts early, 8:45, due to television coverage. We expect the roads to be closed early.

How screwed up is it that drug companies are still sponsoring cycling?

^ ^ would you both prefer brokerage companies? automobiles? insurance? if you dig enough, every sector (likely) has its skeletons. amgen makes epo. so what?
relatively sure when then poured $$$ into r & d, they weren't targeting cyclists. it's amgen's fault their products were used in unintended ways?
you would prefer the race not exist? amgen has stepped up and been the main sponsor for years. i'd prefer sanrio and hello kitty as the face of the toc but i believe
even the kitty has a dark side.

Production value on NBC Sports of stage one was HORRIBLE. Low rumbling (wind) in the background of commentary, everyone sounds like they are in a different studio. Lots of dead air. Christian Vande Velde has a solid cycling background, and is a nice enough guy, but he is not the most engaging commentary host. Bad motorcycle camera work, and on and on.
I hope they get it together.
I'm loving a good and important race on American soil, but the TV coverage stinks.

Has ANYONE actually seen the photo-finish pic from stage 1 ? I'd really like to see Cav & Degenkolb's wheels crossing that line.

edit: ooops. I think I found the link, but the race hasn't started yet today.

I'm heading up to Solvang to catch stage 5 and then stage 8 will come to me in Thousand Oaks.

Looking forward to watching the pros ride the local hills out on Mulholland -- especially after I rode two laps around their route, myself, last month in the ATOC-sponsored L'etape. It was slated as an 80-mile ride (4-laps of ~20 miles) and I only did two laps -- it was PLENTY.

I try to do the tuesday/thursday rides at the rose bowl, though I'm at the rose bowl probably 4 days out of the week. Other than that, I'm not really connected in the cycling community. I was thinking of doing the sunday morning ride at Performance Pasadena, but that is the only other one I am aware of.

They repeat it throughout the day and night, as well. I always record the show afterwards, in case it runs long or for other scheduling snafus.

Anyone there, feel free to pick me up a Rapha Tour of California cap

I would really pay for the cap/shipping* + a slight extra. I would really like 7 or 8's cap, but 1 and 3 look good IMO. Not a fan of 2 or 6 (and I haven't seen 4, or 5).

I get off work at 5 today. Live coverage is from 4-6 here in the Midwest. Looking forward to getting off work and watching the stage finish! I'll have 6 hours to debate who is going to take today's stage while at work today.

*Unless they are $40+ a pop. I could get wicked vintage caps off of eBay for that.... But 7 and 8 do look good....

Yeah... I live in Sacramento and we were all pretty surprised that they were relying so much on aerial coverage for the finishing circuit, especially that area of the city. Hell, Sacramento is called "The City of Trees."

I was more disappointed with how awful some of our streets look (filthy). You don't really put it into perspective when you drive on them everyday but when you see it on TV (that's being watched by the whole world) it really looks bad.

The Folsom coverage appeared to be better from what i saw, at least the aerial shots of the rainbow bridge.
