Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Project: Diamond in the Rough - C'Dale CAAD10

So I very recently found a C'Dale CAAD10 frame for 20 bucks, nothing on it, at all, it was listed as a Cannondale Road Frame, very light, and beat up, description didn't disappoint, saw it in person, it was beat up a bit and repainted. So I am taking it upon myself to get this thing back on the road again.

I'm not planning on making this a race bike anytime soon, I plan on building this bike back up as cheaply as I can, not dirt cheap, but using parts that are reasonable. Keeping in mind that I want to do all the work.

1. Should I convert over to standard BB with an adapter? This would make it easier to replace BBs.
2. After that, I was thinking of using a Shimano 105 series parts, older stuff. Recommendations would be great. I'm not stuck on just using Shimano parts.
3. I found that Shimano RS10 wheels aren't too expensive, again, wouldn't mind some recommendations, not very well versed in Road Gear.
4. Will use a stock carbon fiber fork.
5. Planning on getting a stock headset.

Ideas... ideas...

I've got some colors in mind:

1. Dark grey (Metallic) (This is pretty dark to my knowledge)
2. Matte Black
3. Satin Black

I just got a set of Veulta Corsa Lite wheels for my CAAD9. $230 shipped. Good bang for the buck. They are a bit under 1600 grams and my set were perfectly trued and tensioned right out of the box.

Also, I have a stock CAAD9 fork that I would sell for a fair price. It's white and I think the geometry on CAAD9 and CAAD10 is exactly the same so it should be a perfect fit

Not quite ready to buy anything, I have a deployment coming up (In the Navy), so I will be saving some dough for all the parts I need.

1. I would use Parlee adapters
2. 105 is extreme poverty, 6700 or better. I bought a 6700 crank for $150 off eBay in new condition, $55 6700 RD new, $40 6700 FD new...
3. Used 101s are cheap now
4. Okay
5. okay

How is the paint so bad but not a single dent? Dark gray and black are boring and popular, do something unique.

Thanks for the info on the Parlee adaptors, those are appealing to use, however those are out of stock, hopefully they will be in stock when I get back from deployment. For the crank I did start looking at the 6700 Ultegra crankset, that's a pretty nice piece of kit, but what about the R700 crankset? I will likely go with either. For the wheels you mentions, I can't seem to find what your talking about.

Will you be able to get Cannondale decals - probably not without the serial number?

Good luck, and have a good time at sea!

How about sand it to bare metal, clear coat it, and then do a new Sora group with Fulcrum 5 wheels, black post, stem, and bars. The new Sora group works incredibly well, and can be had for $240 ish brand new.

Going bare metal will be a major PITA to get it right, I'm just going to prime it at use satin black, that would be the easiest to do. The Sora group although a good deal, the 105 5800 groupset has caught my eye, I think I will be saving my money during deployment to get my hands on that set, Fulcrum 5 wheels is an idea, good price, thanks for the info.

I will be posting updates on my paint removal tomorrow, definitely going to be the most time consuming part of the job.

how much would sand blasting cost? wouldn't that be a quick way to strip off all the paint? You may also come out cheaper getting it powder coated instead of painting it.

How did a bike that can't be over 3 years old get so beat up? How sad.

No idea, probably might be cheaper but who knows, I'll have to check later.

You got me, but I feel like I saved a good one, really can't wait to have her up and ready to ride.

first off... Stay safe on your deployment... Thank you for serving..

Second, since you have time and are willing to shop around for deals you have a few options for group sets...

Merlin Cycles in the has great deals. Such as Ultegra 6800 for 700...
Shimano Ultegra 6800 Groupset OEM | Merlin Cycles

105 5700 for about 418...
Shimano 105 5700 Groupset OEM | Merlin Cycles

Poke around and they will sometimes have even better sales ever so often.

Eastwood makes a great 2part paint in a rattle can. It costs about $25 for a can, but it gives a professional quality finish. I used the matte clearcoat on a carbon frame, and it came out great.

BTW, there is a chemical paint stripper that works great. I can't remember the name, but Loews carries it.

Thanks for the links, I'm starting to look at crank lengths now and I'm thinking that 170mm is about right for me, but I'm not sure, maybe I should again go to a good bike shop to talk to someone about that.

I used that, it does work, but now I'm using a stainless steel wire wheel with my dremel to get the rest of, stainless steel wire wheels are fine for aluminum, some of the paint turned to really sticky goo that doesn't want to come off easy.

So, some updates for the frame.

As much paint that I can get off:

Primed, just one small spot to prime from where I hung it, after that I will do some light sanding and then start my coats of satin black.
