Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

One of the reasons I like cycling is because it gives me a break from work, tv, internet, music, or talk. My world if full of distractions, and it is nice to get some time away from these. I look at the passing scenery, listen to the sounds around me, birds, animals, the sound of my tires on the road. I enjoy these things, and do not find long solo rides boring. I would love to be out riding today, but Japan's rainy season has begun, and off to a good start. When the rain stops, the worst of the summer heat and humidity will start. I plan to do some long rides through Chiba and Ibraki this summer,

I had an unpleasant conversation on a solo ride today. I told my legs to shut up and they told me to go eff myself. Then it got ugly.

Set up a podium at home, get back from a ride, and stand on the step for third place.

Create a BF thread-starter in your head about some jerkwad on your ride who cut in front of you as you went for a corner, almost causing you to go down.

Or solve all the problems of the world... then promptly forget the solutions when you finish.

So get a computer and heart rate strap and/or power meter.

When the display shows slacking off ride harder. Some computers can be configured to beep at you when that's not enough.

When you're going too hard for your training plan that day ease off so you're fresh enough to ride hard enough on your tough days even when that's embarrassing slow and you're being passed by kindergartners on big wheels.

It's simple although not always pleasant. Just 18 minutes out of 20? oww...

Interesting, I have only ridden solo until a new guy at work bought a fixer upper, I fixed for him , he no rides so far behind me I'm still riding solo, I manage by making fun of him trying to keep up.

in the last 2 months, started bringing a mini-speaker (about the size of a racquetball) that i plug into the iphone. speaker charge lasts about 4.5 hours when turned up to the max.
i gotta admit to a certain satisfaction to frightening peds with ac/dc, pavarotti et al when riding in the city. the thing is l o u d! always hear cars (except those electric ones
but they never "announce" themselves anyway) coming up behind too. dunno why and i'll leave it to the internet physicists to explain why. maybe it's different frequencies/harmonics...meh.

95% of my rides are solo and now that i'm rocking the anti-social speaker at max volume, i'm not expecting that to change. guessing those fellow cyclists you occasionally
catch and release for a few miles will now shun me like a pariah. awesome.
