Training Tire?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Training Tire?

I usually ride 4000S tires when training and fast group rides. Recently i've been getting a lot of flats which really makes me wonder if I even need the 4000S tires for my riding. I don't race right now, mainly train and ride the occasional fast weekend group rides.

Thinking of using Continental Gatorskin Hardshell to avoid cuts and flats when I train. Anyone ride this tire?

Thanks

I was the same on 4000s, put a new rear tyre on 2 training rides was destroyed big cut.
Been using gatorskins folding tyre for about 500ks now no punctures tyres still looks like new.
Only change is went from 23 in the 4000s to a 25 in the gatorskin
The ride even with the 25 is a bit harsher with the gatorskin than the 4000s ,but I can live with that.

These are such a good deal if you don't mind the white color. I have black ones and they're durable, don't flat easily, and ride pretty well for a training tire. I try a lot of different tires, but I always come back to these in the end.

I'm a Gatorskin hater. I tried a pair and I didn't feel like they lived up to the hype as far as flat protection goes. Didn't handle very well, either.

Wish my 4000s tires would flat. I've got over 10,000 miles on them. They are no longer oval shaped. Kinda flat on the bottom but they won't flat, although this post will probably due the trick!

I use Specialized Armadillo's on my commuter and the Espiors on my road bike with pretty good success on both. The Armadillo's roll aren't too heavy, roll well, and are pretty tough. The Espoirs are about the same but lighter. I rode the Espoirs in Phoenix, Az last year and came up with two flats from thorns over the course or 1800 miles of desert riding.

+1 on the Maxxis Re-Fuse. Very good for a training tire and they're cheap too.
