Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

In a choice between comparable groups like record or DA, I would choose Campy simply because Shimano is so commonplace. I don't think either works any better than the other, and both are aesthetically pleasing, in my opinion, but hardly anyone rides Campy. I know when I see a bike with Campy, I stare at it quite a bit longer.
To be perfectly honest, I would get a "Shimagnolo" mixture. I really like the newer DA bottom brackets with the outboard bearings, but I prefer the looks of Campy rear derailleurs. I'm not mechanic enough to say whether they're compatible or not, but I don't see why not. Of course I really don't have the extra dough laying around for DA or Record, so as Jesse Jackson would say, "The question is moot!"

For my hands, I'd take even Veloce over D/A.

That's why there are other options like the FSA MegaExo or the TruVativ GXP. Campagnolo and Shimano aren't the only or even best game in town when it comes to cranks.

You're right. I had a really cheap FSA crank a few years ago that turned me off to all their merchandise, which is kind of cavemanlike, I know. I'll look at 'em.
