Saddle bag large enough for a novel

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Saddle bag large enough for a novel

On my joy rides I find that I want to take a book with me to read before turning around to come home. Do they make saddle bags big enough to accommodate 12mo or smaller sized books?

Get the Kindle app for your phone Seriously though, it's really convenient for when you get unexpectedly stuck somewhere and find games mind-numbing

I recently bought a frame bag that works really well for small loads like that

Found that by posting this thread in the commuting forums, they offered a lot of other viable suggestions you may prefer:

Are we talking about Gravity's Rainbow, or sci-fi paperbacks?

large ziplock and put in jersey pocket? likely the cheapest solution... well, that and the kindle app on your phone.... just download books from your local library instead of buying if you don't mind the wait also.....

A Carradice saddle bag will handily swallow Elmore Leonard's "Complete Western Stories", a nice lunch, rain jacket and your & flats kit with old world charm & reliable quality. Highly recommended for a well traveled gent of good taste.

More along the lines of a sci-fi paperback, but to be honest the only sci-fi I own is the Dune series.

I'm liking the looks of some of the Carradice bags.

I've got a couple of these that I like. Seem like they'd be big enough for a paperback. Get the leather straps on top and you could do a hardcover probably.

I just saw this the other day in a local hipster bike shop - looked pretty nice, but didn't really have a use for something like this for myself. THE POUCH - Linus Bike
Might be big enough?

Alternatively you could try an old school handlebar bag like they use to ride in the '80s, and just remove it as needed - Lone Peak makes 'em, Handlebar Packs

Although I use the Nook app. I have dozens of books on my phone right now. I can spend some downtime reading anytime said downtime occurs. Also, they let you read from the barnes and noble website so I can read a book while appearing to do work when I'm at the office.

I have a Kindle but prefer hard cover, never considered taking a book along on a ride. I must admit it's a novel idea!

It may be overkill, but the Revelate Designs Tangle frame bag is absolutely awesome. It is large, but is totally unobtrusive when riding.

Bikes: A bunch of old bikes and a few new ones

Jandd mountain wedge 3 is one of the best designed large saddlebags you will find and Jandd quality is excellent.

This thread is not as silly as it first appears. On one of my century routes, at the turn around point I have a nice pub lunch and lie on the grass for an hour to digest. Then I start back.

Lumbar bag is an alternative. I use Mountainsmith. Also good for hiking

I took an Evelyn Wood Speed Reading course so now I have to travel like this if I want to bring enough reading materials to tide me over. I also bring camping gear just in case I fall asleep with a good book.

They're not quite as big as they look. You could probably get a full body camera with a medium length lens in there, but not too much extra. If memory serves, they're repurposed vintage gas mask bags, so they were meant for soldiers to carry a small-ish gas mask into battle.
