Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Chains Chains Chains whats reliable?

Whats your opinion on slotted chains?

I heard they break easily from people that are MTB but how does it fair for road cyclists

The same with hollow pins are they much less reliable than standard? ( roadies only )

and finally does the coating on the chain add to the strength of the chain or is its only purpose to reduce corrosion

Whats your opinion and are they worth investing in? other than saving weight are there any other benefits with chains like these

Hollow pins are fine for road.

Coating prevent wear and corrosion.

Worth investing in a good a chain as you will replace three cheap chains in the time you wear one good chain. Also cheap chains will wear your cassette faster.

OP...better to talk specifics like your application...cassette or single speed, on or off road etc...not chain anatomy.
Very good chains don't have to be expensive. Cheap stuff is cheap for a reason and generally a false economy.
There is the safety element with chains as well. Can also have an in depth discussion about master links as well.
Start with your application and the forum will respond with what chains work best.

I've had good luck with the new shimano chains. I've gotten over 4000 miles out of the 7900 10 speed chains without showing much wear. My 6800 11 speed chain has about 3000 miles on it and still doesn't show any wear on my park chain checker. Avoid the older 7800 and 6600 10 speed chains, I never got over 2000 miles on those.

With shimano you might as well spend the extra $20 for dura-ace with the hollow pins, it saves 20 grams over the ultegra.

I run the KMC X10SL, slotted links, hollow pins, 4500 miles pluses 2 winters on the trainer and still checks ok.
For context I am a "Clyde" that like climbing the hills of western New Hampshire, I'm a strong "B" ride and I commute 22 moles round trip when I can. Several people I ride with run the same chain with similar results.
YMMV

Do you mean ones like this?

X10SL Ti Nitride » KMC Chain

I used one and it was fine. Never broke and lasted in the neighborhood of 3000 miles. I'm heavy and climb a fair bit so maybe harder on chains than some. I stepped down to the x10el though because it was a better price and not much trade off. I think it is worth buying a decent chain but I also think it's worth buying quality for most things I care about.
